Fake Chinese police car is spotted driving around Perth and scaring locals who fear they're being SPIED on - but cops won't do anything about it

(Daily Mail Online) - A Land Rover painted to look like a Chinese police car is cruising around the streets of Perth, terrifying local expats.

The white 4WD had Chinese characters reading 'police' on the bonnet, and 'public safety' on the side along with a police badge.

Police vehicles in China commonly have the same markings and colour scheme, right down to the stripes on the side.

Chinese expats were fearful that their former country could be monitoring them, particularly with the ongoing protests in Hong Kong.

'We are fearful of such Chinese authorities, as most Australians know about the protests in Hong Kong by now,' expat Ho Yan Kwan said.

'So such brazen display, whether actually real or a prank, is worrying for the Hong Konger community here in WA who has no love for China.'

Others who spotted the car feared the Chinese police were actually being allowed to operate in Australia, pointing out the identical car decal...

(KTLA) - A man driving around Irvine in a mock Chinese police vehicle was arrested, and investigators are working to determine his motive, officials said Wednesday.

Several people reported last Tuesday, Sept. 10, that an Asian man driving an Audi sedan made to look like he was an officer with the Chinese People’s Armed Police, a national paramilitary force, said California Highway Patrol Officer Florentino Olivera.

The vehicle was outfitted with the security force’s seal and Chinese police symbols, photos released by CHP show...

The man was arrested on Jamboree Road along the 405 Freeway, the officer said. He’s since been charged with impersonating a peace officer and possessing a fraudulent public seal, Olivera said, and he will be prosecuted the same as if he’d tried to impersonate an American official...

Earlier this summer, officials in Northern California arrested another Asian driver with Chinese markings on their car after the person tried to pull over an off-duty officer, Olivera said...

(7news.com.au) - A rash of sightings of Chinese police cars in Australia's major cities may not be as ominous as many on social media are saying.

Accusations of intimidating behaviour by pro-China supporters in the face of local pro-Hong Kong rallies are unfounded, police say, and the cars have no political intent.

Police in three states have confirmed reported sightings of the cars in recent days.

A spokeswoman for the Western Australia Police Force said the owner of one such vehicle seen around Perth had been spoken to, and he had agreed to remove the decals from his car.

"It had nothing to do with (the Hong Kong rallies), the owner just thought it was a cool thing to do," she said.

"People are buying the decals on eBay."

The spokeswoman confirmed that while it is illegal to replicate the appearance of an Australian police vehicle, there is no law against decorating a car with another country's police insignia.

South Australia police have also confirmed they have identified the owner of a sedan decked out to look like a Chinese police car, with the words "police" and "public safety" written in Mandarin on the side and bonnet and a Chinese police logo...

(The Truth About Cars) - This could be a case of a holster-sniffing wannabe of an exotic variety, or it could be an international incident.

You’re probably aware of folks who like to drive around in former police cruisers carrying as much cop-car equipment as the local officials will let pass without issuing a citation for impersonating a police officer. It’s not a trivial issue to law enforcement because some folks do go over the line into actually impersonating authorities, including committing crimes under cover of fraudulent authority.

What, then, to make of the man arrested by the California Highway Patrol who was driving around Irvine in a black Audi sedan with very authentic-looking decals for China’s People’s Armed Police? It even had an official-looking PAP license plate up front. The PAP is the Chinese paramilitary militia, part the People’s Liberation Army, that is responsible for internal security, riot control, and antiterrorism, as well as some general police work. In China, that is, not California...

This isn’t the first such arrest in the Golden State. Earlier this summer, police in northern California arrested another Asian driver whose car was marked with Chinese characters, after the person tried to pull over someone who turned out to be an off-duty cop.

Why would someone be driving around a California city trying to look like a Chinese paramilitary militia member? Well, over 40 percent of Irvine’s population is Asian, many of them Chinese natives, with family members in China...

Last month, the Australian Broadcasting Company reported that fake Chinese police cars were seen driving in Perth and Adelaide. The sightings raised concerns about the Chinese government or its supporters possibly trying to intimidate Chinese expatriates in Australia who might have been supporting the ongoing democracy protest in Hong Kong. When officials were able to identify one of the drivers, he said it was a joke. Apparently, it’s only illegal in Australia to impersonate an Australian police officer.

If you’ve spent any time online in discussion of China, you may have noticed that there are cadres of Chinese nationalists, and not a few Western apologists for the Chinese Communist Party, eager to rebut anything that’s at all critical of China, the Chinese government, or Xi Jinping, the Chinese dictator. China’s government expresses its “soft power” in many ways.

It’s not outside the realm of possibilities that the man arrested in Irvine is just a Te Jing wannabe, but how would you bet?

This is done for only one reason, to intimidate and control asian communities in the west.

Oh, and it's happened a lot more than once or twice.

I worked at the national institutes of health at their main campus in Bethesda, Maryland. There were/are a lot of Chinese nationals who had visas allowing them to study and participate in research projects on the NIH campus. They were expected by the Chinese government to do their research and head back to China.

There was a rash of defections. Chinese were getting their visas and then defecting. The Chinese government sent CHINESE POLICE, in plain clothes to the campus to intimidate the Chinese researchers. These cops had diplomatic visas. Dressed civilian. Hung around outside the research buildings, including building 10 where I worked - and harassed the Chinese researchers - both those who were there on visas and those who had defected and were then federal employees.

Feds did very little to stop the problem
