Wife and I just got back home from Grocery shopping, Dakota is at dialysis right now. We dropped him off at 3:30 and he has a TV in there and he's watching the GA FLA game. We just tuned in but we missed the first half.

He is walking without the cane today. Was nice to see that thing get retired.

I know a lot of hospitals will change the amount of the bill according to your son's tax returns, if he can't afford it, it will be wiped clean. Usually on the back of the bill you can apply for this. I'm not sure about ambulance service though. I've done this before and didn't have to pay an emergency room bill.

Thank you. Sundays and Mondays are the best days around here, it's the two days off between dialysis. So it's chill time. His schedule for now is Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. With travel time to and fro its almost a six hour process three days a week.

We are down to single digit countdown until the Biopsy, nine days away now. But we have heard it could be another two weeks or longer before we get word of the results.

Very stressful. On everyone. We are having to relearn how to shop and cook, we cant afford to cook separate meals for Dakota so we are eating whats he is having. My wife and I are having to season our food after its cooked.

I think I've taken the plunge down the CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease ) Rabbitthole more than anyone else. I'm doing what a GLPer would do, research and fact checking and I've joined a few forums to hear first hand accounts.

That's about where we are as of today 11/4/19

Give you all little update today, not much has changed since the last update. He had dialysis today they had a seat open at 11:30 so he got in and out early than normal. He doesnt go back now until Tuesday. On Wednesday we have to be at the hospital by 7 am and they will be doing the Kidney Biopsies that day. Not sure if the will keep him overnight or not.

Two days later he has a appointment with the Cardiologist. His creatine levels are still high, over 8 norm is around .02 but they are way down from the day he was first admitted they were at 26.

Found a site call the Journal of Renal Nutrition yesterday while looking for some snacks he could eat. They said he could eat 15 Fritos. That doesn't sound like a great big deal. But he was ecstatic when I handed him the bowl.

"Oh Thank God, something with salt in it." was his reply.

Ill let you know more when we know more.

Hey - on another note - the bills - see if you can get an insurance coding student to look at them and make sure they are correct !

The 10-digit number is what they bill for - and there are hundreds and hundreds of codes

Many years ago my brother went through my fathers bills for a long hospitalization-they charged $29.00 for a tube of Desitin (diaper rash cream ) for his eczema that you could buy in the drug store for $1.99 back then

He got them to agree to reduce it $25.00

Brother went thru the bills line by line and argued each charge - saved Dad $20,000

Seriously - There are students learning coding that know enough to tell you if the codes are correct . A couple hundred dollars to a student could save you thousands

Glad his time in the seat was earlier than expected so he could have the rest of his day! I'm so happy for him that he had the pleasure of ten Fritos - must have tasted like heaven!

You are such a good father, my friend! You are amazing in your tender care of your son and even that you asked for prayer in the first place, knowing prayer is the most powerful force on earth, and always thanking us for praying.

You do the research, you prepare the right foods for him deliciously - you are amazing and righteous parent and God sees all you do.

I'm retired now, but worked for a Nephrologist who owned dialysis units for 35 years. I worked in the office,so I'm not familiar with all the medical aspects. The dialysis unit should schedule a consultation for you & your son with a dietitian and a social worker. These services are included in the cost of the dialysis. The dietitian can help you with a diet plan and should have recipes, and the social worker will help with insurance, cost of meds (perhaps getting free meds from pharmaceutical companies that have programs for renal patients), and advice on any other programs available to help with hospital bills etc. Usually the dietitian and the social worker will see you once a month (it is required by law), but they are usually available whenever you request. If they determine that the kidney failure is not reversible (and I pray that your son's kidneys fully recover), he will be eligible for Medicare (due to ESRD), but it will not be effective for 3 months from the 1st date of dialysis. If he goes on CAPD (continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis) or home hemodialysis Medicare starts from the 1st day of training. Your son may qualify for Medicaid. Do not say that you are responsible for his bills. Say he is on his own. Use his income (or lack of income) to apply for assistance. This would cover his bills and may even be back dated to the date he was hospitalized. Get a disability laywer. God bless you and your family. Praying for complete healing for Dakota!

When I said "Get a disability lawyer" I meant to file for temporary disability Medical Assistance (Medicaid). No need for a lawyer if someone has permanent kidney failure. Sorry, I wasn't saying that he wouldn't recover. I have a son (25 years old), and I pray for Dakota every day.

Awesome, aside from the Frito's...yuck. But glad to hear your son is on his way to recovery.
