No one was ever fired for NOT using social media. It's been nothing but trouble. Unless you're already famous, people really should restrict their use or only do it under fake names.

It was probably a scam company with no intent of being permanent.

I wouldn’t have posted a picture like that on my Instagram, but It isn’t unprofessional from the perspective of applying for a job in marketing. Maybe the applicant was a professional model. I didn’t see anything overtly sexual or duck lips. For God’s sake, there are pictures of our gorgeous First Lady from her modeling career more revealing than that bikini picture.

Are male applicants not supposed to have pictures of themselves in swim trunks or shirtless on their social media? This was a huge screw up for a supposedly female positive company.

She was applying for a social media position. In that case, your social media is actually a part of your resume.

I see no nudity. Is it skimpy, sure. But is it illegal or obviously wrong, no. It's in her personal life. If she were smoking crack or driving drunk I would be more sympathetic with the company.

If a company wants to hire someone, hire them and judge them only by how well they perform the tasks at hand.

I've seen tons of people who are amazing at their jobs, and have personal lives that a train wreck would actually improve their outlook. What happens on company time on company property is their realm. What happens outside of that is none of their damn business.

If this girl is truly good at what she does, a smarter company will hire her. Maybe even a company people would actually want to work for.

So, a successful business woman, who has started at least 5 companies, 1 of which she sold for 10 million, advises potential employee that her "social media presence" is unprofessional.

The way she went about it may have been excessive, but I dont think the CEO was incorrect. The message certainly got thru.
More than half of the Instagram page, is pics of the girl in a bikini, not what the CEO is looking for.

Unfortunately, the little snow flake can't
have it both ways. Either what you post publicly is a representation of yourself you want to share, or it's not. Options include not posting it, or setting it to private.

Potential clients aka customers may not like it either thus hurting sales, that is why they care, it reflects on the company bottom line they think and do not want to chance it. Simple.

If ANYONE thinks that most employers don't do social media searches on prospective employees, they need to get their heads examined. That's like saying "Hmm, I'm thinking about buying this REALLY expensive car... I think I'll just ignore every resource out there and buy it without any further information."

Social Media is out there for everyone to access, and an employer will use any resource that they can to vet applicants - most simply aren't as honest about it as this one was. The CEO of this company made a completely valid statement and point, and guess what? THERE IS NO LAW SAYING THAT SHE CAN'T. I can refuse to hire you for whatever reason I deem important enough, because I HAVE NO LEGAL OBLIGATION TO HIRE YOU.

And yes, whether you like it or not, skeezy underboob pics and bikini shots will ABSOLUTELY give the impression of being unprofessional, like it or not - people's opinions have nothing to do with what YOU believe, but what THEY believe.

I can tell you straight up, if I saw this from a prospective hire (I do NOT search people's social media before hiring, but I've sometimes wished I had) I wouldn't consider their application for a professional position. Call center? Maybe. SOmething that requires no interaction with people? Fine.

Marketing Coordinator representing OTHER companies' brands? ABSOLUTELY not. You've already shown extremely bad judgement in portraying YOURSELF - how are you going to portray your clients' goods and services?

Sorry, perception IS everything, and she's creating a very specific perception of herself. The CEO probably SHOULD have ignored it, but possibly thought she could help the girl, and others, by showing that self-objectification is NOT a good way to show professionalism... making it EXTREMELY amusing to me that the girl complained that the CEO WAS objectifying her, while in fact she was doing that to herself and the CEO simply pointed it out.

I think the company said, "hey, you improve your odds by following us on Instagram". This gal did.

I know nothing about Instagram but apparently by following the company the company got access to this gal's Instagram and, without her permission, posted it on THEIR site basically saying how unprofessional the gal was, etc.

Which the CEO could have sent her an email saying "honey, check yourself, we don't want someone quite to exhibitionistic as per what you're flaunting."

Appropriating the gal's photo and trolling her on the company website seems more than a bit over the line.

In point of fact I'm guessing the company didn't do itself any favors with existing or potential clients. IF I was dumb enough to hire "Kickass Masterminds" my last comment to them would have been "YOU got your ass kicked and you are definitely "masterminds" unless you're adding up the IQ's of your entire leadership team. Your marginal sense of ethics, as displayed in this incident, causes me to believe that acting in the best interest of my company is no longer a safe assumption.
