Many local Walmart's are going to start closing during night due to thefts.

Because of the huge increase in theft, one day you will see automated stores. They will not let you anywhere near the products until that product has been paid for.

You go into a Walmart and there will be nothing but booths. You sit at a booth and look through the items and pick them. Then you check out and pay for all your selected items with a credit card. The employees in the back pack up your order and send it down the line to you in the booth. Zero thefts.

Similar to ordering on the internet.

More than 1/2 of the registers (More than 30 at one point) are now self checkout lanes. They simply don't want people getting hurt while doing the construction

Retail robot revolution? Corporate cost-cutting? All of the above? John Matarese tries to solve the mystery of why there are never any carbon-based cashiers at your local big box store.

If you got the feeling some big stores have fewer human cashiers these days, you might be correct.

One woman says her local Walmart store had no live cashiers when she stopped in the other day.

Peggy Werner says she ran in and grabbed a few items at her local Walmart, the Milford, Ohio Supercenter. There was nothing super about the checkout experience, she says.

"I went to check out and I went up and down the lanes looking for an open light," she said, "and there wasn't anybody there."

Werner says she flagged down an employee.

"I said, 'How am I supposed to check out?' She said, 'Everybody has to check out in self-check.'"

Why no live cashiers?

Werner worried it was a new store policy.

However, when we checked two days later at a similar time in the late morning, we found two cashiers were indeed working (out of 17 checkout lanes in the store).

A manager told us what happened was just a temporary staffing issue, not a major change.

Still, you'll find many complaints on Yelp and Reddit about Walmart stores with just one open cashier.

However, Walmart is hardly the only store cutting back on cashiers these days. Target was one of the last major chains to incorporate self-scanning lanes, but now they are adding more and more.

We checked the Target just down the Milford Parkway and found three cashiers open.

Cashier-less stores coming

Forbes magazine says fewer cashiers is a trend that is not slowing. It says Walmart is experimenting with cashier-less Sam's Club stores right now, and the new Amazon Go convenience stores popping up in some urban areas are fully automated with no cashier in the store.

Werner says she sees older and disabled people not yet ready to embrace this change.

"Some little lady followed me," Werner said. "And you could just see the fear on her face, and I said, 'Have you ever checked out this way before?' And she said no."

We have emailed Walmart corporate to see what their official cashier policy is and will follow up when we hear back from them.

Werner just hopes all stores keep a human checkout lane for a long time to come.

Walmart’s checkout pilot puts shoppers in the fast lane


"Walmart has had a tough time getting customers to adopt scan-and-go technology, despite its success with Sam’s Club shoppers. Now Walmart Canada is piloting a layout that re-brands the technology and reroutes shoppers in a way that could change how customers think about it.

Walmart Canada announced the pilot of a “fast lane” in its new urban supercenter concept in the Toronto Stockyards. Store visitors use scan-and-go technology with their mobile device as they shop. Then at the end of their visit, rather than going to any open checkout lane, they go through a designated fast lane. An associate checks their generated barcode receipt and customers complete their transaction via a credit card associated with their account. Fast lane associates are specially trained to manage issues that might arise during scan-and-go transactions.

Moving scan-and-go traffic into its own lane seems to bring together tactics used in earlier iterations of checkout optimization — express lanes and dedicated self-checkout — with the new tech innovation.


Retailers of all sizes have been experimenting with in-store checkout as they try to streamline an often frustrating part of the shopping experience.

Amazon.com’s automated checkout concept, Amazon Go, represents perhaps the most radical rethinking of the checkout process. Questions remain, however, about the extent to which the company’s Just Walk Out technology can scale.

Amazon announced in May that it would be opening a fourth Amazon Go location in San Francisco, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Other smaller retailers have likewise been exploring innovations to stop the in-store point of sale from bottlenecking. Global sporting goods retailer Decathlon, for instance, recently opened a concept store in California — its first in the U.S. — in which associates walk the store equipped with Apple devices that allow customers to check out without waiting at a central cash wrap.

Meanwhile at Sam’s Club, where the Scan & Go app has proven successful, the chain is trying to reduce transaction times. Earlier this year, Sam’s began piloting a solution that identifies a product without a customer needing to search for a barcode."

I was once in a Walmart at like 12:30 and it was so sketchy and loud. I asked the gal at the checkout if it was always so loud so late. Anyways she perks up and says you should have been here last night we had two women fighting over one man, he had been cheating and the fight took down a section in the clothing department right in front of her. They had to have the police help separate everyone.


Another time, same Wal-mart they had a guy commit suicide in the parking lot in his car.


My current local Wal-mart had a guy commit suicide by police late one evening as I recall it was not a holiday or a weekend or anything.


Anyways I avoid that store after certain hours.

Wal-Mart knows their statistics when stuff goes sideways.
