The sign at the entrance to the Gaelic Club in Surry Hills sums it up: "Change or die." Inside, about 40 people have gathered at the weekly event to welcome newcomers to the Extinction Rebellion movement. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77993861 The "extinction" in Extinction Rebellion doesn't just refer to the extinction of all the plants and animals around us. It means us. "We are currently headed for a planet that is incompatible with human life," says the young woman leading the introduction. "We're on a trajectory for 5 degrees of warming by the end of the century. Extinction Rebellion takes the view this is the biggest existential threat of our history." Core to the Extinction Rebellion, also known as XR, is a demand for urgent, drastic action on climate change. To get there, they are using non-violent direct action calling on the tradition of the suffragettes, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and the Freedom Riders and more recently, the Occupy movement and Black Lives Matter. Is the Extinction Rebellion a small rump of radical activists with extremist views - or the birth of a genuine mass-movement? While it aspires to the latter, it is early days - especially in Australia. [link to www.smh.com.au (secure)] This behaviour is just a distraction from the real threats to our world, which generally are beyond our control, but are somethings we ahould be preparing for, but are not! I will give you some for instances.. 1/ Up until 6000Bc, or there-abouts, virtually the entire East coast of the UK was joined to Europe and had been for a long time indeed. To this day, under the channel and the North sea, settlements, roads, camp fires and tracks have been identified. The catastrophe that raised sea levels some 140ft was sudden and profound. 2/ Harlech Castle stands overlooking Harlech sands. At its base some 150ft below the summit of the castle, there are the remains of a stone jetty and steps which allowed for the mooring of vessels in seawater at its base. Now, this mooring is twenty feet above the ground below it. Not only this, the sea is now at least half a mile away and so this defensive aspect has been lost. Overall, you are looking at an ocean drop of some thirty to thirty five feet. The castle was built in 1180 AD. 3/ Climate change has occurred so suddenly as to cryogenically freeze humans and animals virtually where thay stood, and in some cases, with green leavse and food preserved in their mouths. 4/ The Thames In london regulary froze to a depth of 3ft, so much so that ice fairs were held on it and fires lit too. 5/ On Dartmoor, for a thousand years, the stone age and Iron age hill-forts were the places to live and were the centers of civilisations because the tempratures were so warm. The Romans planted many vineyards here which thrived and if you check out the countries street names, Vine Street, or Road are at there at the top. When you visit some of the places for the sites of our ancient civilisations, the length and breadth of the UK, you always ask yourself, "Why the bloody-hell would anybody choose to live here" But of course....It was t-shirt weather! I have lost count of the times that I have been banned from various ER FB pages by people who simply do not wasnt to engage in any meaningful discussions relating to these facts. |

Link? More info? Quoting: Éireann BTW. Is this taking place in Brussels? I didn't know Europe had a capitol city. (Capital = upper case letters and money you can use against a loan. Capitol = The signature city of a country or state) Lol the Capitol is a building. Capital is the correct spelling when referring to a city. I never realized there was a difference. I would give you green for that if you were not an AC. I am as keen as anyone to preserve the earth of as long as that is possible, but this sanctimonous absolution from real casues and effects has nothing to do with this. Fashion cults, real reality and personal responsibilities are bitter pills to swallo for some. Humans by and large are here for the quirky ride we find ourselves on. Our time here is just one second in one year to give that context, or just a half inch in a mile distance given 5 billion years. To think we have a handle on the long game is pathetic, but there have been many, many changes before, and there will be again. Regardless of what we do, or otherwise. |

The things you site are more of an example of how reactive the climate can be and Is Now and how things can change quickly, particularly with tipping point events, and why we should be honest about our predicament. This event is taking place in just 200 years, that's too fast to adapt for. It doesn't matter to the earth where the carbon comes from, volcanoes have made as much a splash in the past as we have and the result was pretty bad, 95% extinction rate... and then there's the event around 10,800bc, an asteriod or solar flare that made lightning strikes everywhere, humanity went from millions with some technologies to about 5000 with just the remnants. We can be extinguished. Unfortunately eliminating particulate pollution in the atmosphere which helps with solar reflectivity and is keeping us cool is the fastest way to kill ourselves.
