Re: BREAKING NOW - 100,000 Extinction Rebellion activist will block all roads to the capital city in Europe!
The sign at the entrance to the Gaelic Club in Surry Hills sums it up: "Change or die." Inside, about 40 people have gathered at the weekly event to welcome newcomers to the Extinction Rebellion movement.

The "extinction" in Extinction Rebellion doesn't just refer to the extinction of all the plants and animals around us. It means us.

"We are currently headed for a planet that is incompatible with human life," says the young woman leading the introduction. "We're on a trajectory for 5 degrees of warming by the end of the century. Extinction Rebellion takes the view this is the biggest existential threat of our history."

Core to the Extinction Rebellion, also known as XR, is a demand for urgent, drastic action on climate change. To get there, they are using non-violent direct action calling on the tradition of the suffragettes, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and the Freedom Riders and more recently, the Occupy movement and Black Lives Matter.

Is the Extinction Rebellion a small rump of radical activists with extremist views - or the birth of a genuine mass-movement? While it aspires to the latter, it is early days - especially in Australia.

This behaviour is just a distraction from the real threats to our world, which generally are beyond our control, but are somethings we ahould be preparing for, but are not!

I will give you some for instances..

1/ Up until 6000Bc, or there-abouts, virtually the entire East coast of the UK was joined to Europe and had been for a long time indeed. To this day, under the channel and the North sea, settlements, roads, camp fires and tracks have been identified. The catastrophe that raised sea levels some 140ft was sudden and profound.

2/ Harlech Castle stands overlooking Harlech sands. At its base some 150ft below the summit of the castle, there are the remains of a stone jetty and steps which allowed for the mooring of vessels in seawater at its base. Now, this mooring is twenty feet above the ground below it. Not only this, the sea is now at least half a mile away and so this defensive aspect has been lost. Overall, you are looking at an ocean drop of some thirty to thirty five feet. The castle was built in 1180 AD.

3/ Climate change has occurred so suddenly as to cryogenically freeze humans and animals virtually where thay stood, and in some cases, with green leavse and food preserved in their mouths.

4/ The Thames In london regulary froze to a depth of 3ft, so much so that ice fairs were held on it and fires lit too.

5/ On Dartmoor, for a thousand years, the stone age and Iron age hill-forts were the places to live and were the centers of civilisations because the tempratures were so warm. The Romans planted many vineyards here which thrived and if you check out the countries street names, Vine Street, or Road are at there at the top.

When you visit some of the places for the sites of our ancient civilisations, the length and breadth of the UK, you always ask yourself, "Why the bloody-hell would anybody choose to live here" But of course....It was t-shirt weather!

I have lost count of the times that I have been banned from various ER FB pages by people who simply do not wasnt to engage in any meaningful discussions relating to these facts.

I'll just add that since the end of the last ice age, around 10.500 years ago there have been at least three periods just as warm, or warmer than the current climate (in Northern/Central Europe). In fact, civlizations in Europe thrived during warmer periods and collapsed when climate cooled down. Around 5,500 years ago it was so dry and warm in Central Europe that most of the current territory of Poland was steppe. People even abandoned the old practice of cremation burials, because there wasn't enough wood for that.

The most recent warm periods were: Minoan (ended around 1600BC), Roman (ended around 5-6th century B.C) and Medieval (definitely ended around 14th century and that, among others, brought the plague). By 13th century there were vineyards as far north as Torun (northern Poland).

Around 535 AD, following some big volcanic eruptions climate cooled down so much in Central and Northern Europe that civilization in the area collapsed, as there was a huge die-off. With people around fighting for survival and dying from starvation and cold nobody cared about preserving technology.

Generally, climate determines history, but that's generally visible only from a distant perspective. In fact the so-called "Invasion of the Sea People" was most probably causes by the massive cooling in Central Europe around 1600-1300 BC. Also, Roman Empire was beaten by Barbarians, because Central/Northern Europe had optimum, that is, warm climate and so population in the area could grow fast.

Link? More info?

BTW. Is this taking place in Brussels? I didn't know Europe had a capitol city.

(Capital = upper case letters and money you can use against a loan.

Capitol = The signature city of a country or state)

Ooops! No

Capital and Capitol: Which One to Use Where

What a pair these are: they sound identical and look nearly identical and both have meanings that relate to government. Mastering their use, however, is simple.

The key is this: capitol, the one with an "o," is very limited in use. It appears in the term Capitol Hill, and is used to refer to one very particular and famous building, to some other similar buildings, and, occasionally, to a group of buildings that includes those similar buildings.

For all other meanings, the word you want is capital.

I assume that part of that area was also above water at one point just as Doggerland on the east was as recent as 6000 years ago, as you say. The world and its climate have been very different even in pretty recent geological times. And they'll change again. It has nothing to do with us - it's processes we don't understand, especially with the Sun.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77928087

Anyone think it has anything to do with earthquakes on the doggerland fault, which gave the uk its biggest ever earthquake of 6.1 in 1931 right on doggerland?

I suppose the weight of all that water miught have had something do do with that, or a landslide maybe?

I am suprised that the ptb have not got to the images of the l;and-bridge...it was huge!

Here's a good article, i quote some of it:

"The Madness Of Extinction Rebellion: ‘Death Cult’
Extinction Rebellion ceremonyYesterday, in London, I witnessed an eerie, chilling sight: I saw a death cult holding a ceremony in public.

The men and women gathered outside King’s Cross station and formed a circle. They swayed and chanted. They preached about the End Times.

‘What will you do when the world gets hot, what, what?’, they intoned, conjuring up images of the hellfire they believe will shortly consume mankind.

They sang hymns to their god – science. ‘We’ve got all the science / All that we need / To change the world / Hallelujah’, they sang, rocking side to side as they did so.

They demanded repentance. ‘Buy less, fly less, fry less’, said one placard. Catholics only demand the non-consumption of meat on Fridays, as an act of penance to mark the day of Christ’s death.

This new religion demands an end to meat-consumption entirely, as penance for mankind’s sins of growth and progress.

And like all death cultists, they handed out leaflets that contained within them ‘THE TRUTH’.

The leaflets foretell floods and fire: ‘We are in trouble. Sea levels are rising… Africa and the Amazon are on fire.’ The only word that was missing was locusts. They can’t be far behind these other ghastly visitations to sinful mankind.

And if you question their TRUTH? Then, like those heretics who were hauled before The Inquisition 500 years ago, you will be denounced as a denier. A denier of their revelations, a denier of their visions.

‘Denial is not a policy’, their placards decreed. Spotting me filming their spooky, apocalyptic ceremony, one of the attendees waved that placard in my face. A warning from the cult to a corrupted outsider"
