At 18:00 PM UTC, Typhoon Hagibis (935 hPa) located at 30.8N 137.1E has 10 minute sustained winds of 90 knots with gusts of 130 knots. The cyclone is reported as moving north at 10 knots.

Jeff Masters, a meteorologist with the magazine Scientific American, told the New York Times that if Hagibis proceeds as predicted, it could become one of the most damaging typhoons in Japanese history.

"If it hits Tokyo Bay like some of the current forecasts are saying, then it's going to be a multibillion dollar disaster," Masters said.

Authorities have ordered thousands of people in Shizuoka, Tokyo, Gunma, and Wakayama prefectures to evacuate their homes immediately as Typhoon Hagibis barrels toward Japan.

An evacuation order means authorities consider the likelihood of a disaster to be imminent, and are urging people to immediately move to safety.
