Before Typhoon Hagibis landed in Japan on Saturday evening, the approaching storm pummeled the country, bringing landslides, violent winds, record rainfall and flooding.
After the storm landed, the severe weather, evacuation orders and power failures escalated.
About 2.8 million people have been ordered to evacuate their homes, and more than 200,000 are without power.
About 1.5 million people live below sea level in eastern parts of Tokyo, and meteorologists warned that as many as five million people might need to be evacuated if water overwhelmed the levees in low-lying areas.
