'Joker' uses a song by convicted pedophile Gary Glitter. He's probably making money off it | |

Those girls were 'Pan's People' the house dance troupe on Top Of The Pops every thursday in the 70s on the BBC here in UK. when an act was in the charts but not availble to appear (and mime) in the studio, these girls would work out a routine and do their thing. this was as sexy as tv got for a lot of people in this country! they paved the way for the objectified skanky slut culture we enjoy today. great job girls! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 78056936 United States 10/09/2019 10:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Just saw the movie today with my son, he's 16, and the performance by Joaquin was quite amazing. Excellent homage given to Heath Ledger's Joker in one particular scene too. Does the movie live up to the hype? If you go there expecting some deeper connection Batman... yes, and no. As for the "Gary Glitter" scene, I wasn't even thinking about it until it happened. It could have been any song, serious, but it works for the tempo of the scene at the same time. When it came on, I was already aware of the CNN commentary about it being in the movie, so I was ready to analyze the scene and no, there was no context or connection to pedophile in terms of what the scene was. Had it had been when he was visiting a children's hospital, earlier in the movie, perhaps... but then that scene was actually one of the funnier parts of the movie and where there was a shift in the action. BIG shift. The irony of that scene, and very, very smartly written in and which MANY missed the message of was, "What kills more kids daily... handguns attached to violence or childhood diseases like cancer or leukemia and similar?" Most people won't see it that way, but then, the answer is always the same, isn't it? That being, "It depends whose hand the gun is in". Children play with toy guns or sticks or even use their pointing finger and thumb (which is now an offense in schools even) and not dangerous. Clowns used to use them as props with a large "BANG!" that would pop out of them. In a corrupt cop's hand (like it happens in this movie) they are very dangerous). And in a criminal who guns down Thomas and Martha Wayne, equally so. Last thing... about laughter. The movie makes a very strong commentary on the topic of what is considered funny and what is not. I think it was another political comment made by the writer or director in terms of the over sensitive PC culture (the same way he used the gun in this movie as opposed to a movie like John Wick where nobody cares and totally expects it, but applauds louder at the sight of a pencil). So that when you see Joaquin laughing at inappropriate moments throughout the movie, what seems to be ill timed or "crazy" as he is depicted as being mentally ill, is really someone who is much more intelligent, much more introspective and much more aware of how absurd comedy is, the same as polite and empty questions, or drugs for mental health, when he keeps telling everyone, "The world is cruel and I am sad in my heart... What the f*ck is wrong with you sheep?" I hope he receives the Oscar, purely on what he did in playing his role, the transformation away from one ever thinking, "Hey, that's Joaquin Phoenix!" (the same as Heath Ledger's Joker did) and for entertaining the audience with true acting skills (unlike Wil Farrel or some other idiot reading a campy movie script). Speaking of, the director of this film did other movies like "Old School" with Wil Farrel and said that he, and many other comedians in the entertainment business" are getting away from comedy because of all the backlash from so many overly sensitive people these days, especially those who want to sue. He said that a comic book allows for artistic license instead, the same way comedy does. I would go see it at Matinee price ($5.50) the way I did today, or simply wait until it's released in a month or two to DVD and cable. It doesn't rank as worthy as John Wick or Watchmen to see it in a theater, imho. |
