I think there's a brainwash tactic that was always baked into this story. An effort to obfuscate the mind's natural instincts.

"Jimmy sent Sally a dirty message"

So your brain naturally responds, "What did Jimmy say?"


But the trickery at work here goes:

"Jimmy used a forbidden method to communicate to Sally"

So your brain goes "hey that's against the rules!"

As if the mechanics of the communication are more important than the communication itself. It's a really interesting use of distraction to control the focus of the story. While ignoring the "what", the focus is kept on the "how".
