They need to pay for protection...

U S forces did that, shorty. The Kurds just came along for the ride. But neato story. Clueless. US provided air support, but fighters on the ground were Kurds. Not one US soldier lost his life in Syria, while 11,000 Kurds did fighting ISIS on the ground. Without the Kurds it would have been impossible, so writing that they came along from the ride is a statement detatched from reality.
