Also to help the fliter last longer, and clean the air in your house, buy a box fan and duct tape a HEPA filter to one or both sides. Way cheaper and works way better than an air purifier. There are vids on the YouTube.

It depends on how much I use it.

In the dead of winter I change it every month.

I don't use much AC in the summer...I'd rather have the windows open (if possible) so I usually change it once during the summer.
