How are you able to live in 2038 when that year hasn't happened yet?

How are you able to go "back in time to 2019" when your "2038 time" hasn't existed yet?

If time travel is possible... going backwards 20 years from 2019 seems doable...

But to travel from a year that hasn't existed yet makes no sense.

Your questions are good, but show a limited understanding of our world, and especially the nature of time.

You seem to not have an issue with going back in time, that comes naturally to you, however the same applies to going into the future, there is absolutely no difference, our future is the past of someone else and our past is the future of someone. No difference here.

You think that the future does not exist, well, it already does, the only difference is that you did not arrive there yet. If you move really fast you can leave Earth at 30 years old and return at 31 and people on Earth aged 200 years. Who is confused now? This is all demonstrated by Einstein already. As far as Earth is concerned you traveled in the future 199 years, however you only aged 1 year.

Time is just like a map, only using more sophisticated coordinates, if you live in Europe and never traveled to USA that does not mean USA does not exist. It does, you just did not arrive there to see it. Same with time. On the map all locations in time are there, you just need to get there. That is the difficult part scientists still need to figure it out. Direction (past/future) is irrelevant. Although, your instruments and accuracy may limit your range of travel, just like a photo camera, you can't really zoom in and get clear pictures after a point, unless you use a more refined equipment. So if you want to travel 100 years in the past on Earth you may end up on the wrong planet if your instruments are poor.

The more interesting question is if there are an infinite number of timelines to allow for all possibilities. I tend to think there is one start and finish to this experiment however mid-way you can have an infinite number of timelines that eventually all merge back into one and then you repeat the cycle, like day and night, like your breath or heart beat. Timelines merge and diverge as you progress.

Hence why what OP said may or may not happen in our case because we do not know how different our timeline is from his. It can be very similar or quite different. Seeing that Trump was elected in both means that they share a lot in common at least.
