What do cats think a piece of string is? We have a beautiful little blonde long haired tabby, who came to our door dying of starvation. (skin and bones) She survived and went through heat just once, and that was 4 years ago. She seems very healthy otherwise. Anyway, she loves leather shoelaces. She will pick it up in her mouth and scream like a banshee, walking all around the house, looking for me. Then she'll drop it at my feet, and I pick her up. A little ritual she invented. We tried to figure it out and theorize that the shoelace may be a snake, that she's bringing to her kittens (which she'll never have) and she's calling to "them". |

She just wants you to play with her obviously. Hence she's bringing you a toy for that purpose. Try wagging the string around in the air maybe..? Cats think a piece of string, is a piece of string. They like to pretend common objects are prey items. And a pumpkin is just food you can play with. My cats bring me their favorite toys whenever they want me to play with them. Or, they'll just stand behind the toy screaming at me from across the room. They also play fetch with anything round. |

Or, they'll just stand behind the toy screaming at me from across the room. They also play fetch with anything round. You're right about that, both of you. Kitty wants to play with you or is showing you the ropes about hunting. Has the cat seen you drag in anything that's still wriggling, kill it and eat it? Probably not. (but this is GLP so it was still worth asking.) Kitty might be concerned that you're not getting enough to eat and will periodically bring something in for you and turn it loose, giving you a chance to join the pursuit. Or kitty might kill it in front of you to show you how. There's a meme here that gives me chills of fear whenever I see it and I wish with all my heart that GLP would get rid of it: the kitten playing with a ball of yarn. Never allow this, ever! Yarn tends to stick to itself and make knots. That kitten, in minutes, could become tangled and choke to death. I have saved more than one who got tangled up in wool fringes off a blanket, so if I have kittens around, I either pack away a blanket with fringes or cut them all off short - I can make a little knot at the end so it doesn't fray. Short things are okay and a short piece of rawhide provides some chewing exercise too, good for the teeth. |
