Loma Prieta, I was in San Jose getting ready to watch the Giants-A's world series game when the quake hit. I'll never forget the sound of 300 car alarms going off at once. I can still remember it like it was yesterday. Can't believe it's been 30 years now.

Yep, it was sad and scary. Time went really slow and I knew while the shaking was still going on that something really bad bad happened to A bunch of people.

63 deaths, 42 alone because of the overpass falling down.
3,757 injuries.

Was in hotel room, sounded like a train coming. The sound of the building twisting was a horrifying sound.

Yes, I was in the Bay Area when it hit. I watched the ground going up and down in a crazy, surreal motion. That was one of the scariest times in my life. I wore my shoes for weeks, took off only to clean feet. Even slept with my shoes on. So worried about glass cutting my feet and not being able to run away to safety.

Re: October 17, 1989. Anyone remember that day?
I was there; lived in San Francisco on Nob Hill. I was in the kitchen making spaghetti for dinner. Earthquakes were so common that I thought nothing of it for the first 5 - 10 seconds. Then it kept going and going - a “rolling’” feeling under your feet. I think it lasted about 45 seconds.

Funny that my first thought was that I have to call my Mom and let her know that I was OK because she would be worried sick. All of the landlines were out and of course there were no cell phones back then. Pay phones could get out about 20% of the time so I walked around for hours trying payphones until I got through.

Some areas like Nob Hill (solid rock) were barely damaged. Other places like the Marina (built on landfill) were devastated and burning.

The bridge collapse was the worst part. To this day, I get very nervous if I have to stop my car under an overpass.

I remember watching the game with my dad when it happened. I was 8.
I remember the overpass footage the most.

The Governor's Office of Emergency Services says California's earthquake early warning alerts will become publicly available statewide starting tomorrow.

The warnings will be pushed through a smartphone app.

yep! I wasn't there, but there was a baseball game in SF on live TV.

Some of the horrific scenes of cars going off the bay bridge. Or the people trapped under the freeway, nearly crushed and still alive in their cars. Horrific.
