Garlock fault capable of M8 quake!!! [link to scedc.caltech.edu (secure)] Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72957473 The whole map is shaking. All of the faults I mentioned. A lot of M0’s-M2 are a lot better than a single shock, and it means seismic stress is being released. If you read the linked article it states the opposite. Smaller quakes may not be releasing stress but building it elsewhere which personally makes more sense & I have always felt to be the case. I’m in Los Angeles & also spend a lot of time in Pine Mountain. I feel it getting closer . Just hope I’m home whether it’s LA or up there . Preferably Pine Mtn Take care all! |

Garlock fault capable of M8 quake!!! FYI, if this fault slips, the big quake will be closer to Vegas than LA. Hoover dam? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75047794 We felt the July quakes pretty widespread in Vegas. In my opinion it had diffused down to a 4+ by the time it got here. That's based on living thru Loma Prieta in 89 and half a dozen other quakes in my 20+ years in CA. I'm laying here suffering from a norovirus, but I have all the time I need to mentally go through my peeps. See how ready we are. JoyfulNV former NMSunshine |

Garlock fault capable of M8 quake!!! @DrLucyJones 1 hHá 1 hora Mais Compton M3.7: Deep quakes start in the good transmitting rocks and only has to pass through the absorbing rocks once. So they are felt farther away @DrLucyJones 6 hHá 6 horas Mais The M3.7 in Compton is near but not on the Newport-Inglewood fault. It was also very deep (15 miles) so no one was really close to it. Very similar to a M4.0 Oct. 28, 2001 which was ~1 mile northwest and just about as deep. |

Garlock fault capable of M8 quake!!! It's highly concerning. The Garlock fault is no joke... Unprecedented movement detected on California earthquake fault capable of 8.0 temblor Quoting: Simple27 LOS ANGELES (Tribune News Service) — A major California fault capable of producing a magnitude 8 earthquake has begun moving for the first time on record, a result of this year’s Ridgecrest earthquake sequence destabilizing nearby faults, Caltech scientists say in a new study released in the journal Science on Thursday. In the modern historical record, the 160-mile-long Garlock fault on the northern edge of the Mojave Desert has never been observed to produce either a strong earthquake or even to creep — the slow movement between earthquakes that causes a visible scar on the ground surface. But new satellite radar images now show that the fault has started to move, causing a bulging of land that can be viewed from space. “This is surprising, because we’ve never seen the Garlock fault do anything. Here, all of a sudden, it changed its behavior,” said the lead author of the study, Zachary Ross, assistant professor of geophysics at Caltech. “We don’t know what it means.” [link to www.stripes.com (secure)] This fault WILL set off others The Garlock Fault: Southern California's Sleeping Giant Awakens [link to www.youtube.com (secure)] Folks just need to be prepared at all times. Garlock fault capable of M8 quake!!! How the Ridgecrest Earthquakes Broke the Earth Quoting: joinca [link to caltechletters.org (secure)] Author's note Since the publication of this article and our associated scientific paper there has been a considerable amount of media attention focused on the results, particularly the detection of so-called ‘creep’ on the Garlock fault. It’s great to see people interested in our science, but while this creep is interesting, the small motion of the fault does not mean that a major earthquake is going to happen on the Garlock soon. Earthquakes can happen in California at any time, so if you live in earthquake country, make sure to get prepared. :clintyes: |
