the trains were burnt and apparently there was at least 2 other stations on fire at the time of the live coverage, a few minutes ago

local airport in santiago filled with stranded travelers

no staff to help travelers people are sleeping on the airport floors

chilean wheelchaired female handball team sleeping on the floors

they were set to play brazil tomorrow

5am in the morning and sporadic arrest of curfew breakers and suspected looters/vandals continue

wow they destroyed their nice looking subway trains and stations

The Santiago Metro (Spanish: Metro de Santiago) is the rapid transit network serving the city of Santiago, Chile. It currently has seven lines, 136 stations, and 140 kilometres (87.0 mi) of revenue route.[1] This service is managed by the state-owned Metro S.A. and is the first of four urban railway systems in Chile, along with the Biotrén of Concepción (1999), Merval of Valparaíso (2005) and inter-urban Metrotrén service (2017).

The Santiago Metro carries around 2.5 million passengers daily. This figure represents an increase of more than a million passengers per day compared to 2007, when the ambitious Transantiago project was launched, in which the metro plays an important role in the public transport system serving the city. Its highest passenger peak was reached on 31 October 2012, reaching 2,780,666 passengers.[citation needed]

In June 2017 the government announced plans for the construction of Line 7, connecting Renca in the northwest of Santiago with Vitacura in the northeast. The new line will add 24.8 kilometers and 21 new stations to the Metro network, running along the municipalities of Renca, Cerro Navia, Quinta Normal, Santiago, Providencia, Las Condes and Vitacura. Its cost has been initially estimated at US$2.53 bn and it is projected to open in 2025.[5]

In March 2012, the Santiago Metro was chosen as the best underground system in the Americas, after being honoured at the annual reception held by Metro Rail in London.[6]

alot of Lider supermarkets have been looted or burned down

it is 6:40am and another Lider supermarket has been set on fire

over 50 supermarkets looted and burned

Thanks for asking but I was asleep. I went to bed late and I have been pulling all nighters all past week so I am really tired, and now depressed with the situation. This happened so quickly and so violently it’s kind of hard to come to terms with.

Líder is the local brand of Walmart so there’s a lot of anger against global brands, and everything perceived as hegemonic and opressive (some churches also have been burned, at least one bank).

random people have gathered at the metro to clean up the charred remains in the underground

children along with mothers and fathers spontaneously gather for clean up efforts

the interviewed people are disappointed the metro burned claiming that is not the way to protest while blaming the government and stating this had to happen and calling the gov to wake up

Santiago always has military on the streets. It's a crazy place. That's how they keep people from smash and grabs. I was shocked when I was there. Full auto guns with the round magazines in front of every nice store.

I don't mean to lessen what is happening there. It looks terrible in the photos. Those guys can clamp down in an instant. Latinos in big cities have two sides to them. One is calm and peaceful and the other is emotionally unstable, unhinged.
