As an amateur astronomer and hardcore astrophotographer who has made big investments in equipment I have serious objections to this absolutely over the top proposal.

I was unhappy about the 12,000. I know this wont be the end. I'm sure the next proposal will be for 144,000.

It goes to show ya. If you do the bidding of the US govt, especially the DOD or Intel agencies, you can basically pay and get away with anything. Space X launches for the NRO, I'm sure the CIA, and likely agencies that we do not even know about.

There really should be global oversite. This is coming from someone who advocates minimum government intervention in most things. But nobody can "own" space and there should be penalties for things like intentionally blowing up satellites to test a new weapon system.

There has to also be limits on satellites in leo imo. Otherwise it will cause more issues for humans than the "problems" it solves. Fiber optic internet works just fine.

The original proposal was only 12,000 satellites. They're now increasing the number of orbital planes and the number of satellites up to a total of 42,000 (subtle Hitchhiker's reference?). What will this do to the night sky? Let's take a look at how crowded the sky is going to be getting.

Just curios if anyone knows how they plan to beam through rain clouds and atmospheric moisture in general. Anything above 20 GHz is heavily attenuated by air and water and beaming through the entire atmosphere seems like it would require a lot of energy.

As someone with a telescope, I'm totally against this. I don't want all this garbage causing a distraction when I look at the sky.
