What the heck is the difference between a transgender person and a cross-dresser (an unmodified person, with original plumbing intact, that likes to dress as a member of the opposite sex)?

Can't get my head around the difference? Am I alone?

It used to be something to be totally ashamed of and people would have their lives ruined over being caught doing it. It was considered a total sexual thing. They did it to be turned on- cross dressing.
