Was Stephen King ever any good?
Or was it all hype?

Because I'm watching the It remake right now and it's nothing but jump-scares and boring people clearly based on the writer's friends from his boring town in Maine.

Read the books! He's an author. Forget about the movies. Stephen King is a fantastic author of thriller novels.

King is a good writer technically, and extremely prolific. I'm not a big fan, but I do love The Gunslinger.

I never understood the appeal of It. Scary clowns are silly.

Are you his publisher? chuckle

I just get the feeling he made it to the "number one seller" book of the month club because he knew someone.

I read some of the books. Wasn't one entirely based around a dog that got loose?

Yes, but it's well written. Most of his stuff is very dark. I would think it would be right in the wheelhouse of GLP'ers.

No, he isn't.

All of his books fall to pieces at the end. Ridiculous conclusions. "It", is no exception.

Moreover, all of his stories follow the same formula. Read one, you've read them all.

The only possible exception is, "The Shining", because Jack Nicholson made it so much better than the book.

Pet Sematary is excellent. I tried reading Desperation and could not get past the first chapter because it was so boring. From A Buick 8 was mediocre. Those are the only novels that I have read. I prefer his collections of short stories.

Re: Was Stephen King ever any good?
You can't judge an author by what screen writers do to their works.

I rate King as an excellent writer. I'm not really into horror, but some of his books cross into other genres. One of my most favorite books is "From a Buick Eight."

That being said if you happen to see a movie based on a book that you really like, do yourself a favor and get the book and read it. 8 times out of 10 it will be much better than the movie, contain details you might find of interest; and even sometimes have different plots and endings.

That intrigues me. I always found his stuff suspenseful and well written, not predictable or as another poster said, "same formula." Different strokes I guess.

350 million

His books have sold more than 350 million copies, many of which have been adapted into feature films, miniseries, television series, and comic books. King has published 61 novels (including seven under the pen name Richard Bachman) and six non-fiction books.
