Re: Was Stephen King ever any good?
You can't judge an author by what screen writers do to their works.

I rate King as an excellent writer. I'm not really into horror, but some of his books cross into other genres. One of my most favorite books is "From a Buick Eight."

That being said if you happen to see a movie based on a book that you really like, do yourself a favor and get the book and read it. 8 times out of 10 it will be much better than the movie, contain details you might find of interest; and even sometimes have different plots and endings.
 Quoting: G. House

I can only think of one film that was as good as, possibly better than the book it was based on.

They say The Shawshank Redemption, a King story, was much better as a movie. I didn't read it.

He may be a leftist protest but you can’t say he isn’t one of America’s best living authors.

If you don’t appreciate it then maybe you’re not much of a reader.

but 'Hearts In Atlantis' is still a dang good novel, in

Or was it all hype?

Because I'm watching the It remake right now and it's nothing but jump-scares and boring people clearly based on the writer's friends from his boring town in Maine.

I read every Stephen King book there was until the late 90's, and I always enjoyed them. I especially like the short story collections since once I start a book, I will probably not stop reading until I have read it all. I pretty much stopped reading all fiction again besides this internet fiction around the year 2000, I have no idea after that.

The Stand was great, the shining was awesome, Dreamcatcher was good in concept. I mean hes one of the most prolific writers of all time. Not all of it is terrible. Some of it is duds. Kind of like Louie LAmore. Some of it is good. Some of it is terrible.

Scariest one I ever read. I was so scared that I had to sleep in my mom's room that night. (I was 15.) Just as we were about to fall asleep, the closet door opened, squeaking loudly. I screamed. My mom screamed. We slept with the lights on!

I believe there are many people writing novels under the name Stephen King.

Not sure if the person known as Stephen King has written anything.

Christine was good.
The Stand was good.

He has a kinship with southern Baptist preachers in his use of repetition to build a mood and set a tone that other writers seem to eschew.

Does a pretty good job with what I'll call "coming of age" settings. The movie Stand by Me was based on a short story.

"Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption was made into the movie The Shawshank Redemption, one of the better prison milieu movies in my opinion.

'Salem's Lot was also good, one of his earlier works.

Hearts in Atlantis, book AND film, are top notch.

The Dark Tower series...meh from me on that one.

Green Mile was a good story (he serialized it a la the 30's) and a decent film as well.

I didn't mind Doctor Sleep.

The Shining, as a book, was decent if you read it in winter...

For some reason the transition of his works from book to film has been an art that filmmakers have NOT mastered; they dumb things down waaaay too much and feel a need to spoon feed the audience.

That's really funny. Thanks for sharing. The scariest book I ever read was Amityville Horror. I couldn't read it at night. I loaned it to my 15 year old friend, he was reading it one night, got so scared that he threw it under the bed. We never found it. Weird.

Read the books! He's an author. Forget about the movies. Stephen King is a fantastic author of thriller novels.

TRUE.

THE BOOK WAS DIFFERENT THAN THE MOVIE... IN ALL CASES.

EVEN WHEN THINGS WENT WELL FOR KING AND HE WAS AT THE HELM HE COULDN'T GET THIS PERSON HE WANTED, OR THAT... AND THOUGH THEY WERE GOOD MOVIES, A BOOK IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN A MOVIE.

YO HOGAN SHOULD MAKE A HOLLYWOOD WHERE WE WATCH MOVIES FOR 2 DOLLARS, THEN RE-WATCH FOR A DOLLAR, THEN 50 CENTS, THEN 25, ETC UNTIL IT'S THE COST OF THE UPLOAD AFTER 10 VIEWS FROM ONE IP ADDRESS.

He had a great run until he quit smoking, drinking and taking drugs. Seriously. I bought hardcover editions of the Dark Tower series. They suck except for the Gunslinger, which he wrote at age 18. The Stand was my personal favorite.

If you don’t like reading, The Shining movie was great.

For all of you mentioning "The Shining" you know that King hated what Kubrick did to his novel, right? And you also know that Kubrick used that movie to show that he was involved with faking the moon landings, right?
