Pence Outlines US Space Vision, Working With ‘Freedom-Loving’ Nations, in Speech
BY Bowen Xiao | October 21, 2019

(Epoch Times) - Vice President Mike Pence said that the U.S. Space Force will soon be a reality and positioned it as a key national security priority for safeguarding the rights of the United States and its “freedom-loving” allies in space, among other goals.

Speaking to an international audience at the 70th International Astronautical Congress—a global space advocacy organization—Pence reiterated President Donald Trump’s vision for the United States to lead in space once again. He brought up how Trump, in his first year in office, revived the National Space Council to coordinate space activities across the government.

Pence, who is also chairman of the National Space Council, said space plays a critical role in national and international security. He spoke about the soon-to-be-created Space Force, though he didn’t give an exact timeline for when it will begin.

“Trump has directed our administration to work with bipartisan leadership in Congress. Soon, we will stand up the sixth branch of our armed forces: the United States Space Force,” Pence said.

In August, Trump officially opened the U.S. Space Command, a precursor to the Space Force that Trump first announced in 2018. Air Force Gen. John Raymond will head the new unified combatant command. Raymond is currently the head of Air Force Space Command, a branch of the Air Force responsible for the military’s space operations.

“Soon, it will be a reality, and the Space Force will be a vanguard to defending our nation, defending our freedom and defending the rights of all freedom-loving nations in the vast expanse of space,” Pence continued...

Moon to Mars

Pence, in a roughly 20-minute speech, spoke about how Trump made it U.S. policy to return to the moon by 2024, to ensure that the next man and first woman on the moon will be U.S. astronauts.

“Not only to plant our flag … but to establish a foundation for an eventual mission to Mars,” Pence told the crowd, as he laid out how the United States plans to achieve this goal.

“In order for us to take this next big leap, we’ll develop the technologies to live on the moon for months and even years,” he said. “We’ll learn how to make use of resources that the moon has to offer...

The National Space Council (headed by VP Pence) and the US Space Command (the precursor to the Space Force and currently under command of Air Force Gen. John Raymond) are teaming up with Space X, Boeing and allied nations, including Canada, Japan and Australia, to get us back to the Moon and to Mars.

US Is Leading World in Space, VP Mike Pence Says
The 2024 moon-landing goal shows the nation's "renewed vigor and vision."
By Tariq Malik | Oct 21, 2019

(Space.com) - The United States is leading the world in space exploration once more but is still willing to work with "like-minded" countries to expand humanity's reach throughout the cosmos, Vice President Mike Pence told an international crowd today (Oct. 21).

Speaking at the 70th International Astronautical Congress here, Pence said NASA's push to send American astronauts back to the moon by 2024 shows a "renewed vigor and vision" for U.S. space exploration under the Trump administration.

"The truth is, for more than a generation, a vision for human space exploration had languished, in this country and around the world," Pence said. "But those days are over."

Earlier this year, Pence and the Trump administration tasked NASA with landing the first woman and the next man on the moon by 2024 using "any means necessary." That project, which NASA has named Artemis (after the twin sister of Apollo in Greek mythology) comes as NASA celebrates the 50th anniversary of its historic Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969, which sent astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the lunar surface while crewmate Michael Collins remained in orbit.

The Apollo 11 crew was honored by the International Astronautical Federation's World Space Award, and Pence hailed Aldrin, Collins' grandson and Armstrong's son Mark during his remarks.

"With Apollo in the history books, the Artemis mission has begun, and we are well on our way to making NASA's moon-to-Mars mission a reality," Pence said.

NASA has partnered with commercial companies to build elements of a planned space station near the moon, called the Gateway, to serve as a staging ground for future crewed missions. Meanwhile, the agency has tapped U.S. companies like SpaceX and Boeing to fly astronauts in space, and is working with Canada, Japan and Australia on its moon program...

Pence also touched on national security and space, specifically the new Space Force, a sixth branch of the U.S. military that the Trump administration wants to oversee space military efforts. The work the Space Force does won't just be for the United States, Pence said.

"Soon it will be a reality, and the Space Force will be a vanguard for defending our nation and defending our freedom," Pence said, "and defending the rights of all nations in the vast expanse of space."

VPOTUS told the IAC you gotta be friends with the U.S. or you ain't getting a ride to the Moon and Mars.

Apparently there were no GLPers in attendance because no mention is found in the following SpaceNews.com article of anyone yelling, "VanHalen belt, HELLOOOO! The Apollo missions were fake news!"

Pence calls for American-led cooperation in space exploration
by Jeff Foust — October 21, 2019

(SpaceNews.com) - “Under President Donald Trump’s leadership, America is leading in space once again,” Pence said, a theme he returned to several times in a speech that lasted under 20 minutes. “He believes, as I do, that’s it’s America’s destiny to be the leader amongst nations in our adventure into the great unknown.”

Pence, though, said that the United States was willing to cooperate with other nations in space exploration. “The United States of America will always be willing to work closely with like-minded freedom-loving nations as we lead mankind into the final frontier,” he said.

He cited as examples of that interest by several nations in cooperation on the NASA-led Artemis program, including Australia and Canada. Last week, the Japanese government announced its intent to work with the U.S. on both the lunar Gateway and lunar landing missions.

Pence repeated the theme of working with “freedom-loving” countries and a favorable regulatory environment. “As more nations gain the ability to explore space and develop places beyond Earth’s atmosphere, we much also ensure that we carry into space our shared commitment to freedom, rule of law and private property,” he said. “We will use all legal and diplomatic means to create a stable and orderly space environment that drives opportunity, creates prosperity and ensures our security on Earth.”

Pence’s American-centric comments got a lukewarm reaction at times from a diverse international audience. A handful of people also walked out at the beginning of his speech, protesting his views on social issues...

Proof That 'Space Force' Has Launched
By James Barber | 3 Oct 2019

(Military.com) - A recent photo suggests that "Space Force," under the command of Gen. Mark R. Naird, has formally opened for business.

Wait, you say. That's "Space Force," the Netflix series created by the team who made "The Office" and starring Steve Carell. That's the back of Steve's head in the photo!

Sure, that might be true. But who's to say that "Space Force" the Netflix series and Space Force the military branch aren't one and the same?

The host of "The Apprentice" is our commander in chief. The most famous White House press secretary of all time is cutting a rug every week on "Dancing With the Stars." Why can't a Space Force succeed under a proven leader like Steve Carell?

Netflix announced the start of production with a tweet.

No word yet as to when "Space Force" will stream on Netflix or how Gen. Naird will implement his plans at the Pentagon.

Pentagon lays groundwork for Space Force to blast off in 2020
By Valerie Insinna and Tara Copp | Aug 9, 2019

(Defense News) - Vice President Mike Pence on Aug. 9 unveiled the Pentagon’s plan to set the stage for a Space Force — a new military service branch centered around space operations — which could be in effect as early as 2020.

That plan involves creating an independent unified combatant command, U.S. Space Command, that will eventually be led by a four-star general, Pence said during a speech at the Pentagon.

It also calls for naming an assistant secretary of defense for space that will be in charge of standing up the department of the U.S. Space Force and could eventually transition to the position of its first service secretary.

Pence’s announcement comes after President Donald Trump ordered Defense Department leaders in June to begin paving the way to set up a Space Force...
