The best adaptation for screen was a BBC miniseries starring Anthony Hopkins as the convict and Jonathan Rhys-Davis as Joe and the ghost of Vivian Leigh as Estella.

Hard to find, never made it to DVD except in Germany but also includes the English audio track.

GE is a timeless book about materialism, wanting more than what you have, wanting what you can't have, and the torment of actually getting it, or most of it.

Most of all, it is an insightful exploration of unrequited love, the kind that haunts young men with too much heart and nowhere to put it...young men like The_Meridian...and the cruelty of the woman(women) who see the weakness and exploit it for no other reason than sport.

Charles Dickens is a brilliant writer with no shortage of wit amidst the grim background of abuse and darkness of the place and time. Yet there is love for the most abhorrent of characters, like Mrs. Joe, rendered through a wink of Nostalgia hinting at the cathartic nature of his creations.

It is fascinating to note how many of our modern problems were just as prevalent 140 some-odd years ago, and the moments where humanity shines as rarely as it does today.
