Kids Lunches today vs. 1970
I work in an elementary school. Most children get lunch from the cafeteria. It's disgusting. Glutened chicken nuggets, fries or pizza. Other options are sugar cereals with milk and a cheese stick. They make them take a soft apple and dried carrot sticks to make it a complete meal. And a chocolate milk or sweet punch. These are the options and most students on government health care receive this or something like it daily. Sometimes pizza.

When I was little you had a lunch box. Mom packed a sandwich with a delicious piece of fruit and a folded kitchen towel to eat from. The meat on the sandwich was often what we had the night before for dinner. So meat loaf, chicken, roast beef, ham, etc.... You could only get white milk delivered in a bucket to your class....

We sometimes as a treat got a devil dog or a yodel but that was very rare.....

What did your school lunch look like when you were growing up?

I lived walking distance to home. So I walked home for lunch.

Sometimes I would eat at a local burger joint or the newsstand that sold hotdogs and potato chips.

Re: Kids Lunches today vs. 1970
Never ate the cafeteria food. It was always things like chicken, burgers or meat loaf, mashed potatoes with gravy and cooked vegetables. That's a whole dinner-sized meal and looked awful to me, especially when a friend pulled a long hair out of her mouth that was in the potatoes, or I saw those rubbery veins sticking out of the chicken.

I always brought a sandwich, chips and cookies or pudding cup. I usually had the small carton of milk from school with it, but I remember also having a thermos in my metal lunch boxes which usually contained orange juice.

I ate a lot of sandwiches, and in the Winter soup or stew in a short thermos and a piece of fruit every day. If we got lucky there'd be a slice of leftover pie or cake, or homemade cookie, but that was about it. I do remember when she'd stick something unusual in there like a little baggie full of gherkin pickles or pistachios- that was always a big treat, but back then (mid 60's/early 70's) no one was getting inventive and they certainly weren't trying to fatten us up like lunches today.

The rhubarb crumble and chicken and mushroom pie at my secondary school in the 80's was surprisingly excellent.

Almost straight after school I went to the Army where the food there was fantastic. Weird.

I too work for the public school system.
What disgusts me is the amount of food thrown away DAILY!
They will not feed the homeless with it or donate it to someone who will for fear of lawsuits, so it gets thrown in the compactor.

Sometimes garbage cans of hamburgers chicken sandwiches ect.

With all that said...
BOSCO STICKS are the bomb!

Always brought my lunch so no crotcheteria food for me. In high school we had open lunch and could walk to restaurants/stores or just eat our lunch from home out of school. Last 2 years, just drove to gfs, got some and had a sammich on way out the door. That school was a minimum security luxury prison compared to some.

For me and my bro. PB&J on white bread, an apple or orange and very rarely a Twinkie or small piece of cake. Also we took our milk in a thermos which matched our lunch boxes. Two of my favorite lunch boxes (which were metal), were the school bus one and the barn one. I loved those sets. When I was a little older and it wasn't cool to have a lunch box, we just used small paper bags.

Maybe not so weird. I loved cafeteria food in High School. One of the lunch ladies lived across the street from us and I made my mom get the secrets of the watery jello, and incredibly good though heavily breaded hamburgers.

Yup. Sandwiches made from last night's leftovers. Grapes, apples, oranges. Winter was soup or beef stew in a thermos. Round about 3rd grade they brought in hot lunch. Absolutely disgusting. That was about 1976. The kids wouldn't eat it. Salisbury steak was something I had never heard of until that time. Growing up Italian, it was hard for me to even watch other kids eat the spaghetti that was served.
That was something else mom made for us in thermoses spaghetti....it was fun getting it out into the cup.
And man did you bring back memories with the mention of Devil Dogs. That dessert required plenty of milk. The first bite was always hell if you didn't have any!

1985- A North Philly Breakfast for heroin addicts consisted of A Hot Sausage on a roll with ketchup and fresh onions, a bag of 'Red Hot" chips, and a "Red" soda (High sugar content Hawaiian punch type) I asked Harry the vendor about the pattern. He said it holds them together for about 2 classes in college before they have to run home to take a hit.

Now what was a typical lunch in the 60's? A sandwich, Veal loaf, Kielbasi Loaf, Baloney, Oscar Mayer liver spread with mustard. A pack of Yodels, a soda, usually some sort of fruit flavored type. Then outside for a cigarette.
