Re: What makes people untrustworthy?
Well, in my case my mother-in-law actually stated that she taught her children to lie for her....
My marriage problems then became so very crystal clear...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 40546062

My mother in law stated is was an act of love when she had sex with her sons, it was a family tradition. Yes things become much more clear when we know the truth of what we are dealing with, but often we discover the truth way too late.

Re: What makes people untrustworthy?
We are born liars. We have to be taught not to lie. Ask a small child, say 18 months old if they did something wrong ( ate chocolate with proof of chocolate on their mouth) and they will instinctively lie and say no to keep from getting into trouble. A defense mechanism maybe?

I disagree. Learning to lie is a conditioned response from bad parenting. If a parent isn't judicious & fair in meting out justice, if they are unstable emotionally & unpredictable in dictating right from wrong, the child adapts to become a liar.

I have dealings with Amish & Mennonite people. Almost without exception, they are honest to a fault. It's all about their rigid morality, & how they raise their children. I almost wish I could live among them given how dishonest the rest of the world is. I prize honesty & truth above all else in other people. Once a person lies to me, I lose all trust in their word. Once a liar, always a liar.
 Quoting: XeroGravity

Even the Amish and Mennonite have some born bad apples. The communal strict laws and order enforce behavior more than out side of the communities. It is not a personal morality trait of choice but by force.

I have to agree, in many cases some kind of brain malfunction.
We need to find a cure and treatment for the criminal mind.
Often a very bad criminal will come from a good family without explanation as to way they turned out that way.
Children taught to be violent, lie and steal is another kind of problem.

Every sentient being carries the inate capacity for deception as a basic survival instinct. You use deception in some form 100 times a day amongst humans just trying to be 'nice' to everybody. Your motives and personal preferences are irrelevant to the question of whether or not you can mislead, obfuscate, obscure, divert, distract, soften, downplay, exaggerate, patronize, flatter, becloud or befog when you think you have a good reason for it.

I've always thought that too, they are born this way, not made or victims of their environment. It is sad, that's why I actually feel bad for them. If there is a God then he would know it's a birth defect and that would really piss believers off I think.

I'm sorry. That was kind of over the top & rude wasn't it?

I was mad about something else, and reached the snapping point when I happened to be reading your pretty innocuous post, but definitely not because of your post, though I do disagree with it still.

Now it's been established I have no excuse , you nevertheless excuse my random, rudderless rudeness -without-a- real- reason, right?

When I ask someone, "hey how are you doing today?"

They look upset yet, say "I'm doing well."

I believe them initially.
Why would they lie?

Then I learn later that day that this person was really poor and not doing well.

I now know they lied to me and are therefore untrustworthy.

There is no "force" involved. Nor is there anything "oppressive" about their lifestyles. In fact, when Amish/Mennonite young people come of age, they are sent out to live amongst the "English" (i.e. the ordinary people from outside their community). If they choose to abandon their community, they are free to go. Nearly all choose to stay.

They are kind, warm people with gentle souls. The real oppression is the collective cruelty & hatred & nastiness of the world from outside their community. I feel humbled whenever I'm in their presence, & I've even gone to one of their churches on a few occasions, stayed in one of their homes for several days after being snowed in during a blizzard, & broke bread with them. There are no finer people on this Earth.

Psychological projection is a defence mechanism in which the human ego defends itself against unconscious impulses or qualities (both positive and negative) by denying their existence in themselves while attributing them to others.[1] For example, a person who is habitually rude may constantly accuse other people of being rude. It incorporates blame shifting and can manifest as shame dumping.

I would not go shopping with someone and tell them a dress that is unbecoming on them is the one to buy.

Another thing, you are cutting others down on the internet. If a person is a psychopath please to not stay with them and hide when you leave, I do care if some one live with a true psychopath, or sociopath, it not health at all.

Otherwise, families who are close don't have as much differences usually, no one is better and anyone else. There is a problem when people are to trusting in who they think is not telling the truth because they have been told it over and over again by stranger on TV or else where. I try to check from evidence of real documents. All can either let you know if the person is not being exactly truthful or using terms that can be interpreted different, some people do this and have for years in all kinds of professions.

It best to talk about fixing regular relationships with family. They can be you back up and sometimes if possible you can have better relationship with them. Know yourself first no one perfect, except The Lord God no man is perfect except Jesus Or lord, that it, no one is perfect and they may think you are the problem while you think it them, and you never talk honest with them. Of course I not part of anyone's family, except my own. I know they can talk behind my back and do, I let it all go, it not important to me because I am not perfect, I love them, I know them, they do not mean half of the things they say. And if they did it no skin off my nose it theirs to carry.
Sorry I got a headache
