These haunting pictures show California residents picking through the smoking remains of their homes in the aftermath of devastating wildfires. It's as though you never existed, it's all gone, you have nothing to show of your entire life. Our fire victims told me that they had even lost their sense of personal identity, of who they were in the absence of all that had mirrored them in their homes and surroundings. The devastation and void was internal as well as external. |
