Low budget trick to try to make the guns appear unfamiliar and futuristic by removing bits to a standard prop instead of fabricating custom add-on parts, maybe? Or the guns came without furniture installed from the prop department and they didn't know any better? I really hope they didn't try to fire those things. The barrel alone would be bad enough, but the gas tube would be glowing after just a few shots. (Unless they use CGI, gas-operated firearms in movies are modified to use the gas system still to cycle the weapon, so that gas tube would be functional.) And there's no other place to put your hand.
