Unusual spike in radiation - US

I am from the same area.

The only thing I can think of is the typhoon that hit Japan and washed away radioactive waste they had stored in bags. We are getting dumped on from the weather patterns that pic it up.

Just a guess.

Oh and Spokane has a lot of radioactive isotopes so is higher in radioactive density than places elsewhere.

Manhattan project material came from mines in the area.

Learned that when doing research on radon in basements in the area.

It's twice background levels over here (20 vs 10), but that's to be expected in post-Fuku Europe when the jet stream comes down on us during winter.

Worrying about anything less than several hundred CPM in ambient air is too much worrying. A bounce of 10 or 20 CPM is nothing.

Ambient air readings seldom get higher than 50-80 CPM unless you are at altitude---at 30,000 feet, CPM can be 800 or more: [link to whatisnuclear.com (secure)]

EPA measures the radiation on a HEPA filter that filters 68 m^3/hour which, of course, means much higher expected levels--usually 5,000-10,000 CPM of gamma radiation. One tiny hot particle could raise it to 100,000 cpm or more.

China puts Iodine in their water supplies and their IQ's go off the charts.
USA takes Iodine out the water and replaces it with flouride.

they add iodine to prevent thyroid damage from radiation? Or for some other reason?

Many years ago I ran across a strange orange plastic binder at the library in the back corner. I tried to take it home to study but they would not let me. When I went back to read more it was gone.
It had fallout maps listing radiation levels from radioactive clouds as it passed just north of Spokane heading east. It had medical reports and radiation readings from rad detection centers and doctors that were set up in specified locations required to test the people and not allowed to inform them. People were required to go in for tests in designated areas and not told why.
I have tried to find more information on this but came up blank. They set off nuke tests in WA or had a hell of an accident. There was more than one cloud and time frame in the book.

There was no unusual spike in radiation levels in Spokane--just normal week to week variation.
