Ways to save on electric bill
I think I'm on to something!

Noticed on my bill the different prices are listed for "peak demand" and "off peak".
Peak price is $6.36 per KW.
Off peak is $1.50 per KW.

Peak is 6-9 AM and 4-7 PM.

I don't run my electric dryer, or even wash clothes during peak any more. I also put my heavy jeans out on my porch railing to dry a couple times instead of in my dryer (which is almost worn out too). The jeans use the most juice to dry.

I also do not shower at those times, or I at least turn off the electric breakers to the hot water heater during those periods.

Even though I am now running a big squirrel cage fan on my heat exchanger for the wood burner continuous or almost, my bill dropped from $130 to $80 in the last month.

Good deal! Any more ides?

Off peak is usually just a dedicated circuit for electric hot water heaters that only heat up in the off peak times.

Unless your whole supply is somehow monitored for peak and off peak consumption then you’re just wasting your time using other electrical appliances in the off peak times.

Re: Ways to save on electric bill
Congratulations! That’s a great decrease !

I studied power consumption years ago and lowered my bill by over half !

Raising a family cost a lot and I wanted to save for my children and not give more than I had to to the electric company

I replaced bulbs with CFL bulbs before they were available retail - sent to catalogs and put them in the most used lights

I replaced every ceiling fixture that was on a lot - like the laundry room with a fluorescent fixture - the circling ones were bright and had “warm “ bulbs

Kitchen too all fluorescents

I put MOTION DETECTORS in the family tv room, pantry cupboard, and bathroom so the kids did not have to remember to turn them off (my kids learned to wave their arms of the light went out and they needed it haha)

I got a dryer with a MOISTURE SENSOR so it shut off when the clothes were dry

I hung out laundry on sunny days

I cooked in batches - if the oven was hot Inised it for more than one thing.

MOST of these things are available from local stores now

But not then

The electric company came out and read my meter - unscheduled time

Then they came the next month and changed the meter itself - never said anything - just changed it

The next month - a guy from the electric company called on the phone and asked “What are you doing? Your power use keeps going down and we can’t figure out why!” I told him all my energy changes - and I figured they would all pay for themselves in 1 1/2 years - even the new dryer - and that aincould teach others to do it if they wanted to hire me. He said it was a nice idea but never called back haha. That would have been a dream job for me. That was about 20 years ago.

Our power was 12 cents KWH then - now 15 per KWh

The only thing powering devices in the realm I reside in, is the power button which usually always has the broken circle symbol to reinforce the fact that the only thing running electronic devices and or basically everything here are demons that we personally power. The rest of the garbage is for psychological reinforcement.

Electricity and power are not the same thing. If you are paying a power company for electricity, you are probably getting screwed.

From my experience, most of the electricity goes to the air conditioner, and most of the natural gas goes to the furnace. Best way to save money is to adjust the thermostat .

I enjoy looking at the electric bill, BTW.

I cheat a lot.
We heat with Nat Gas. Cheap and environmentally better.

Our hot water in on demand NAT Gas too. Boy that is really cheap.

We've heavily insulated.

You guys are all bad customers.
I use more than I need knowing I'm keeping the boys down at the coal plant in a job.

My electric company tried selling me green energy.
I told the fool I want cheap black coal energy exclusively.

I even have the audacity to run decorative water features 24/7.

I am a good customer.

No, UI am keeping electric company in business.
You can live like dirt.
I leave every light on in my house regularly...Even *GASPS* the outdoor lighting when I am indoors!

So I use more and get a bigger rebate for being a large consumer.

I live the life not being in the dark.
The bill is only a number.

Re: Ways to save on electric bill
It's VERY dry here in the winter, so hubby got a device that installs in the exhaust line of the clothes dryer and it includes a filter. It puts the hot MOIST air into the house instead of wasting it.

I hang clothes on the line, even in the winter, as long as it's sunny and expected to be above freezing for a few hours.

A tip for hanging laundry in the winter: wear a pair of the lined rubber gloves! It keeps the moisture off your fingers, makes it MUCH nicer to hang clothes in the cold!

Window wrap helps keep out the cold, too.

We lower the heat at night.

We use a few power strips that can be shut off which eliminates 'power ghosting.'

The first year we were here, the power company sent a guy out to check our meter because we were using so little power.
