A few hundred years later the Welfs split up and one side of the family moved down to Venice Italy and changed their name to Guelph. The Guelphs were called the 'black Guelphs' because of their use of torture, assasination etc, and became the leading family of the Venetian Black Nobility in the city-state of Venice (which had a monopoly on trade).
