Earthquakes in Ventura, CA: The bigger problem
Between Ventura and the Channel Islands is a deep underwater canyon. On the island side of the canyon is a long fissure.

If an EQ causes the fissure to slip and create an underwater landslide, it could send a very big tsunami toward Ventura and Santa Barbara, possibly reaching the shore in under 1 minute.

I'd say more than 99% of the locals don't even know about it. Bad for the real estate market, I guess.

Good thing Ventura has high elevations to escape to.

Yeah, but a tsunami that arrives less than a minute after an EQ doesn't give people much time to get higher. Then, there's Oxnard. Hundreds of thousands of people are low down in the flood plains.

5 3-pointers in the last ~36 hours. About 30 2-pointers. The frequency is going up. It's swarming.

I live in Ventura. We're used to earthquakes but they usually roll. These are quick jerks and almost feels like you're falling a little. Like sinking? I'm sure we're not but they're just so unusual!

Hmmm...
Yeah, I lived in VTA for decades. Moved north and east, up in the mountains. I think I felt one just about an hour ago, but nothing is on the USGS maps except the Ventura quakes.

Looks like they're hitting directly under Ventura.

How long ago was the last one you felt?

Dang. I hope construction on the new hospital has stopped while these swarms are going on.

Is there really underwater asphalt volcanoes off the coast there? One youtube person is claiming this.

Agreed. This is not normal at all. Swarming is unusual for Ventura.

Ventura is also essentially the last bit of the Garlock fault, which reaches southwest from Ridgecrest. They call it a different name, I'm sure, but I'd bet you good money that the zigzag fault below Tejon and above Ventura is just an extension of the Garlock.

I see that local swarm on Google Earth.

It is as you describe.

If you live anywhere near there get that GO bag full of meds etc. and next to the front door.

If there are, then they're probably much further offshore. I think we'd see more volcanic stones on our beaches if it was close by. However, I do know that there is quite a bot of volcanic rock right where CSUCI is in Camarillo. I believe that area was once volcanically active. So, there very well could be one that I haven't heard about right off shore.

Something really cool about the underwater canyon between VTA and the Islands is something that doesn't exist anywhere else - at least to the same scale (last I checked). There are massive underwater forests of giant kelp. I'll try to see if I can find a video.
