Canterbury Downs-Minnesota Horse of the Year rescued from a KILL PEN! XOXO
Canterbury Downs-Minnesota Horse of the Year rescued from a KILL PEN! XOXO

It isn't only Texas, Colorado and Louisana that see some of the most well bred celebrated horses in kill pens.

"In the end it didn't matter how many titles "Tubby Time" had earned, or how many fans were charmed by his enduring flourish to finish his turf races, win or lose with his tail flared out like a champ.

But after the cheers had faded and the trophies grown dusty, the racehorse immortalized as the Canterbury Downs 2011 Horse Of The Year had lost the fine trappings of an earlier life to wind up discarded like trash into the slaughter pipeline.

Looking bewildered and unrecognizable from the horse he'd once been, the multiple stakes winner from Minnesota, named for the popular basketball coach "Tubby Smith" and once so adored by all who knew him - owners, fans and racetrack officials, was discovered in early May in a Pennslyvania kill lot.

You know, I've been a racing fan, and I've had friends that were racing fans, and I still think horse racing could exist and not be the filthy corrupt mess that it appears to be today.

But this shit - is bullshit for sure, and it's really turning me off from the sport and the people who run the sport.

I still love the horses and I don't want them to be liquidated and go extinct, you know?

And I want there to be places where people can go and see horses and where people can have jobs working with horses, and where horses can have a job to do.

This shit though, as I said, is intolerable bullshit for sure.

A little too close to home too as that is a track I have attended and it's one of the better ones in terms of the horsemen, one of the better run tracks.

I feel exactly the same way.

Peta and Horse Racing Wrongs want all the horses extinct, I think George Soros may fund both sides (those for and those against racing, especially the Protestors)...

I spent the first 2 years helping rescues save ottb's trying to clean the sport up. After being harassed, threatened, and repeatedly disgusted with the actions I have seen taken, including the latest one with the whip, where the guy intentionally wrapped the rubber bands around it, at a time, where if I had a dollar for everytime someone in racing tweeted me or commented on my former fb pages, that the whips don't hurt, or they are soft sided...yada yada yada, I could buy everyone here at GLP doughnut and prolly a cup of coffee...DOrolleyes

but all that propaganda does not change the fact that jockeys right now, with all the fear of horse racing ending forever didn't think twice about wrapping his whip (soft sided whip they say) with rubberbands to wack his horse.

Just seems like what I am up against when I ask for change. Some scream at the top of their lungs for change, the good ones in racing, everyone knows what is needed at this stage in the game. Yet there are always oppurtunists who use the fact that while the other jockeys will not be whipping their horses (Melbourne cup jockeys all received text messages hours before the Cup that they better not whip their horses). So if everyone else is NOT whipping them, and you can get an extra advantage by wrapping your whip (this did not happen at Melbourne Cup btw), why not, when you can win millions?

And whether it is tying rubberbands on whips, or tying horses tungs down, or sprinkling jimson weed on their hay, or putting cocaine in there food, denying them water for a day, shooting them up with Lasix needles, shocking them at the end of the races as Steve Asmussen's trainer was accused of, throwing their bodies out in dumpsters as Mountaineer race track did a few weeks ago, or killing them because they broke an ankle at the track and won't make money anymore. Or finding them in a Louisiana kill pen 22 at a time and having 24 hours to come up with the $1,000 bail for each one or they die, then trying to find homes for them, when NOBODY wants to adopt them, it is just a batshit crazy cruel sport.

There is nothing left for me to like or love or even stomache about horse racing anymore, it is pure animal cruelty and carnage the deeper you dig and it cannot go on. It just can't.

They laughed at us, so we had to end the game. There is no fixing it, horse racing is more broken then humpty dumpty and all the kings horses and all the kings men cannot put the sport of kings together again.

The only thing left to do is save the horses. XOXO

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77504347

I just came across the story today, today is when I found out about it. SO you are hearing my outrage now...

I first learned about thoroughbreds ending up in killpens two years ago, from a Twitter post showing 22 of them in a killpen at Thompson Ship Horses Direct in Louisiana, whose owner is now allegedly facing 10 counts of animal cruelty, while all the other kill pens who discreetly ship the thorougbreds to slaughter to keep the owners names clean, go unpunished for their discretion and role in this animal carnage.

All of them deserve equal punishment as do their owners.

However nothing is ever done, hence the growing public outrage against horse racing.

Now four years ago on the other hand, you could prolly find me in a bar somewhere having a mint julip with the fellas enjoying a mint julip, long before I had any idea that those gorgeous and stunning athletes were going to be made into the hot dogs everyone at the Derby seemed to be enjoying...

Now I know better, so I do better...

Basically it is what everyone is saying...

Re: Canterbury Downs-Minnesota Horse of the Year rescued from a KILL PEN! XOXO
Ten or fifteen years ago the writing was on the wall for racing. Management knew they had an aging fan base and that they had to attract a younger crowd or the sport would die along with its fans.

It was as obvious as can be that young people are not interested in any activity that involves the possibility of animal abuse.

The tracks were trying to get a younger crowd by having concerts and fashion events which was fun and everything but in the end what makes racing unique is the horses themselves.

All the marketing is never about the horses or their stories, or the interesting backstretch life and the workers, or the jockeys.

The marketing just tries to show young people having a quasi glamorous social time, which they could have anywhere, with or without horses.

The horses are what attract people to the sport and all of the marketing and stories should be about the horses and it never is.

California Chrome was the last glorious gasp of what once was our original national sport.

I am sure I will follow his progeny but another drag about racing is that it feels like the entire sport is behind a paywall. Oh well don't get me started it's really sad to see them take themselves out when they had many chances to make good and turn it into something great.

If you've spent time around a track you see them having shitty priorities and doing everything for shallow show while ignoring the genuine issues on the backstretch. Things don't survive when they are so soulless and hollow and 2 dimensional.

Thank you for your perspective, horse racing was once the most popular sport in the U.S., now it is crumbling. There are many inside who love their horses and are working hard to change things but across the board from the HBPA, to the media, to the NTRA, to NTWO they would rather harass and silence those who speak out about the abuses then end the abuses, and do right by the horses and make it a sport participants, fans, and bettors can not be emberassed to be associated with.

Yeah, but you 'horse rescue' people just pawn the horses off to people and never check up on them further.

Thread: Horse Rescue is Animal Abuse - Dina Alborano Horse Rescue (Disturbing)

Then you go ahead and excuse Dina Alborano for placing the horses she 'rescued' on a horse farm where they were neglected, ate the bark off of trees, didn't receive vet care, and eventually died and their corpses lay there rotting until the place was shut down.

You end up prolonging the suffering of horses and then want to shut down any industry that depends on horses and basically eliminate horses completely.

You don't even take the time to understand the industries that you want to shut down or consider the chain of events that ensues. It's just uniformed 'I don't like this, shut it down' oppressive nonsense. You ghoulishly search for headlines like this and then do a little victory dance where you point the finger at somebody and something you know nothing about and feel like you are doing something good.

Good point, I understand but these horse's touch a very special place in many people's hearts.

Try to watch the 1973 Belmont Stakes without tearing up. "He's moving like a tremendous machine". Watching that horse run gives me the chills every time.

I have a photo of that race signed by jockey Ron Turcotte.

Other countries use horses for meat. In the US we've gone pretty soft, and things have gotten ridiculous with people looking to be outraged 24/7.

Yes, it sucks when a horse gets injured. It happens, though. Always has, always will. The industry tries to make improvements, but reality is that horses are pretty fragile.

There also isn't much use for uses in the modern world, so finding homes for them after racing isn't always easy. Sadly, many become hamburger for your dog (dog food).

I just get irked by these people who have little to no knowledge of horses or the industry trying to dictate to everybody else when they don't even have a simple grasp of the basics of the industry.

They think they are 'saving horses' but the horses aren't going to some magical ranch of gumdrops and licorice, and once you 'save' that horse he needs to be fed, sheltered, cared for by a vet, etc. They don't 'check up' on the horses. Many have been neglected. No vet visits. No adequate feed supply so they eat bark off trees. They slowly and painfully die from starvation or illness and their corpses are left to rot.

...but they still pat themselves on the back and say 'what a good thing I did'.

I quit eating meat after learning and understanding how horse slaughter works...

watch the HBO or ABC specials and see if you ever want to eat beef again, not even about morals anymore it just bloody disgusts me now. I cannot stomache it. I grew up eating meat, all my recipes I cooked were made with it,

watch them shock the horses and stun them with other horses looking on, watch them lift a leg up and string a healthy thoroughbred up only 2 years old in it's prime and taunt it and slit it's throat, have you actually watched the video.

Whether a horse or a cow makes no difference to me anymore.

Do you think GOD Asked Noah to put all those animals on his yacht two by two so Noah could snack on them when times got hard and he got hungry?

You see instead of helping Dina find those horses homes or donating to help feed them the industry chose to attack her especially NTWO and now the truth is out. Dina has been cleared by the New Jersey Attorney Generals office

and has been found not to have kept one red cent of that money for the horses, or to have anything to do with animal cruelty.

Here is the link, and evidently criminal charges are allegedly coming to all those who have spread hate and lies about her.

 Quoting: Vision Thing

XOXO
 Quoting: #OneLove XOXO 78117970

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71611133

I have taken the time.

I have told the horse community to do right by the horses or we would shut them down over 6 months ago.

They laughed at us.

I have been threatened and harassed by NTWO for the last 6 months trying to help horse racing get their shit together.

However after all the horrible things that have been exposed against horse racing since the harassment by ntwo began, shutting them down is the only option.

Let's count the scandals this year...
1) Kentucky Derby roses were stolen from the Mary West wife of Gary West the owner of Maximum Security in front of a crowd of people and given to the second place finisher Country House. How awkward...

2) Justify was found to have failed his drug test for consuming scopolamine. He should have never raced in the Kentucky Derby and there fore would never have won the Triple Crown.

3) Worse the California Horse Racing Ass covered up the Justify scandal.

4) 36 horses died at Santa Anita alone this year including a horse that ran lame in the Breeders Cup Mongolian Groom and broke down in front of everyone on live t.v.

5) NTWO allegedly lied and harassed Dina Albarano after she spoke out about racehorses and saved over 150 from slaughter. NOT ONE of the race horse owners who left their horses to the meat man later rescued by Dina have faced charges and the NY Attorney General has allegedly by all about cutting cleared Dina's name now 100%.

6) A horse was found dead in a dumpster by PETA at Mountaineer race track with it's racing stocks still on. Mountaineer said that was NOT against policy.

7) THe HBO show on horse slaughter aired, and all the fans saw what happened to the beloved athletes.

8) All the Australians saw the ABC special on horse slaughter and the entire country said #NupToTheCup even though it is a holiday there and they all get the day off of work.

9) Churchill DOwns after 10 years of fighting for a racino turned on horse racing and opted not to pursue one for Arlington angering all the horseman who now hate Churchill Downs. (home of the Kentucky Derby).

10) Countless thoroughbreds have been seen fighting for their life on social media in kill pens, ntwo jockey club and the hbpa and the casinos chose to ignore it.

11) Former President of MN HBPA's horse "Somerset Jackson" was rescued from a kill pen by a 17 year old with a heart of gold and a go fund me. Somerset Jackson had epic wins, and was a fan favorite for sure.

Just like Tubby who was also found in a kill pen, also from Minnesota who won horse of the year in 2011.

12) Grandsire of a Triple Crown winner "Dusty Savanelli" grandsire of Seattle Slew Triple Crown winner in 1977 was found in a kill pen. Here is a video of Seattle Slew winning the Kentucky Derby in 1977... you'd never imagine watching this one day his grandsire and maybe even "seattle slew" himself were found in a kill pen. Two horses were unidentified from the group of rescues. [link to www.youtube.com (secure)]

13) Jerry Hollendorfer was banned from Santa Anita

14) Maggi Moss's jockey punched another jockey in Iowa after a race in the locker room, total sucker punch.

15) A jockey got death threats after leaving welts on his horse and can't find work now everyone is calling him a horse abuser after he tied a rubber band around his whip that I have been told a thousand times are soft...my ass. #BanTheWhipsALreadyWTF

16) Three horses died at Del mar yesterday, two died and instead of euthanizing the 3rd horse that broke it's leg that die they decided to operate prolly to spare the death toll...idk. Maybe that one owner actually cares about their horse but doubtful.

17) Louisana casinos were broke into and drug samples were stolen last December.

18) Horse racing was exposed as receiving over $7 billion in u.s. taxpayer welfare!

19) Maggi Moss sold her broodmare that had an "almost human like personality" to be a broodmare in Japan after racing for her instead of retiring it to pasture.

20) George Soros owned horse bodemeister (he also owns Justify) was sold to Turkey.

21) Steve Asmussen's jockey Scott Blasi was caught on camera shocking his racehorse with a buzzer and caught on tape laughing about it by peta, other owners have been caught shocking horses to win races too. [link to www.nytimes.com (secure)]

22) Pimlico in Baltimore was condemned parts of it for being a total shithole even though it is foreign owned by the Canadian Stronach group and has received multi million dollars for the city of Baltimore which our own President calls a shit hole and it needs the money.

23) Omaha Beach the predicted winner of the Kentucky Derby (0wned by Rick Porter of NTWO) scratched the same day it sold it's breeding rights for $22 million dollars just a day or two before the Kentucky Derby.

How does a horse who NEVER won a Kentucky Derby let alone a Triple Crown sell it's breeding rights for $22 million?

Either someone owes Rick Porter of NTWO a favor or that is some horse...

The scandals go on and on...feel free to add to the list...XOXO

How does racing have even ONE fan? Bet on anything else play Blackjack, Poker, Baccaret, bingo, slots anything but carnage...damn!
