What you guys aren’t realizing is that Hawaii quakes are not from plate movement, they’re from magma movement.

Magma movement under MAUNA KEA! The very active part of the island is only under the volcanoes to the south.

Rev Woo Woo is right, this quake is caused by volcanic magma movement. Three smaller quakes since this one hit.

True yes, (I did quote "very active") but they are volcanos after all... there is always that possibility that any volcano could become active even after thousands of years of being seemingly extinct...

I know it sounds a bit far fetched but it's true and common sense when you get an understanding of how things work in a seismic sense with volcanos etc...

Thread: Earthquakes in Hawaii - BACK TO BACK!!

If this is correct then something is going on with the plumbing down below the island since that volcano is supposed to be inactive from everything I have read.

The EQ was pretty deep, 32.6 km, so nothing is going to "erupt" anytime soon since I am sure all the tubes heading up to the volcano proper have been blocked for at least a thousand years if not 2 or 3, but still it indicates that the inland is "restless".

The biggest risk to the Big Island is actually the Hilina Slump on the south flank of the Kīlauea Volcano collapsing into the sea. In the great 1974 quake that area (about 25% of the island) actually separated from the rest of the island and moved downhill a bit ... but there is a huge ledge going out from the island on that side which goes a number of miles out into the sea that appears to be stable, and the slump just slid a bit sideways on that ledge before it stopped dropping /separating from the more stable and main part of the island.

As a volcanic Island EVENTUALLY the Hilina Slump WILL fall off the inland and go into the sea, it is just the nature of the Hawaiian Island and in fact of all volcanic islands. That event though could still be 80,000 years from now, and there is no way to get even a rough timing as to when that might occur.
