COST to run....? Figure it out.... Inquiring minds want to know the bottom line.... Might need it for a whole winter in a solar flare or EMP event.... |

I'm thinking of getting it ready in case the power goes out this winter. It would be a good thing to have ready and waiting. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72946843 Damn straight Furnace went down at 22:00 It’s a great thing to have at the ready Luckily, the freezing cold has passed House is nice and toasty |

I can get 14 hours from it "It's a friendly friendly world" (Andy Kaufman) Calm seas do not a sailor make, Nor easy horses, a horseman. And Jesus was a sailor when he walked upon the water And he spent a long time watching from his lonely wooden tower and when He could be certain only drowning men could see Him- Leonard Cohen |

You need an old fashioned kerosene heater with a cotton wick rather than a woven fiber-glass wick. The diesel is now very-low sulpher content and only needs a bit of 93% rubbing alcohol and a few cc's of diesel additive to do fine in the old wicks. The newer fiberglass wicks require kerosene. _______________ They let me off with a warning and a couple of bullet holes. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72946843 Do a "burn in" of a couple of tanks of K outside before you bring it in. As for them burning hot, they put off MUCH fewer fumes by running hot so they get complete combustion. If you turn them down much you are much more likely to get incomplete combustion which leads to more carbon monoxide. For those who have never used them ... a couple of pointers. * ALWAYS fill them OUTSIDE!! and let it cool down a bit before refueling (5 to 10 minutes * Use one of those siphon pumps for transferring fuel, NEVER pour fuel directly in the tank via a funnel etc. because eventually you WILL have a bad fuel spill that way. * Worst fumes are on shutdown. As soon as shut down TAKE UNIT OUTSIDE so it can "outgas" outside of the house. For the bigger 23,000 btu units 8 to 10 hours is about right as I recall from a full tank of fuel. As mentioned NOT cheap to run ... but a GREAT backup source of heat for a power or furnace failure. We always kept at least a two week supply of fuel around (stored outside in the METAL kerosene cans - NEVER plastic) since we had experienced power failures in the winter where the power was out for 10+ days. Practice with it BEFORE you need it ... and yep keep the wick clean and trimmed. |
