Yeah the instructions re the wick look even more convoluted than trying to put the thing together with unknown parts "It's a friendly friendly world" (Andy Kaufman) Calm seas do not a sailor make, Nor easy horses, a horseman. The cotton wicks do burn-out slowly. If the cotton wicks are allowed to burn dry, they will turn to ash on the final 1/4 inch and the wick will need to be "trimmed" of that ash next fill. The cotton wicks only have about an inch to burn, so 3 or 4 burns to dry is all they are good for. Moral--don't let the fuel burn out in the cotton-wick heaters. _______________ They let me off with a warning and a couple of bullet holes. |

Propane won't make carbon monoxide. Again, it's impossible for it to make carbon monoxide by the nature of propane combustion. It does however create lots of moisture. Ok for inside, but bad for tools (rust). Kerosene heaters make carbon monoxide, so you have to have a small gap for fresh air in the space your trying to heat. No problem for the garage. Doesn't make the moisture that propane does. |

I'm just going with data from where I live but a bedroom is lightly heated with an oil heater to maybe 4-5C and then the woodstove is going so the main living is too hot not to open a door and the rest of the house can...well be cold. The whole place is about 1400sq ft and I only go there from my cabin if there is a power outage anyhow. I heat for about $7.00 a month with an oil rad but chip in on a 1/4 cord (1 1/2 cord for all year) in case I need to walk 35 steps next door. Don't store it in plastic very long or it will degrade. I used some last winter that had been stored 27 years in a sealed metal container and somewhat to my surprise it burned just fine! |

Propane most certainly can produce carbon monoxide during combustion. Glad people are advising to keep a window cracked and have CO detectors but shit if it contains carbon and you're burning it, then CO is going to form if there isn't full combustion. Stay safe & warm. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 69505161 Slovenia 11/14/2019 04:49 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I bought a Japanese electronic heater - Qlima 3531 brand. I am very satisfied and I recommend it. The power is variable between 1 - 3.1 kw, the temperature selection ranges from LOW (1 kw - 0.11 liter / hour) till HIGH (3.1kw - 0.33 liter / hour). The fan distributes the heat extremely fast. It is relatively quiet and can be used at night to sleep. It has several safety systems that turn off when it is hit, when the air is blackened or when the flame does not burn blue, when it overheats, and so on ... In minimum (1kw) you can burn almost two days (45 hours) with a 5-liter load of kerosene in the internal tank. The device needs an electrical connection to operate - between 70-120 watts. If you have a not very reliable electrical distribution, it can be a problem ... I use it with JET A-1 jet fuel. The liter costs 1.32 euro. It burns perfectly well. Try using it with kerosene (RED DIESEL) sold at gas stations - 0.96 euro / liter ... It burns, but very badly and made smoke and smell. Not recommended. Qlima brand prepackaged fuel is extremely expensive - 2.25 euro / liter of regular quality and the premium costs 2.50 euro / liter. Absolutely crazy. |

I had a carbon monoxide detector. It NEVER showed any level at all of CO. They do recommend some ventilation. Houses are not that air tight and a lot of air exchanges happen in a day through air leaks. If you want an emergency heat source kerosene is about the only way to go. Kerosene can be kept for a long time. With the cost today it is for emergency use only. |

It needs electricity but it's more of my plan on case of furnace failure not power outage. I have a generator with about a week worth of fuel so I'm covered there unless it's SHTF. I keep 10 gallons of kero on had but after that it would be heating oil from my main tank, I have run the heater in my garage on Diesel and it didn't register any CO on my meter which has a digital display. I still probably wouldn't sleep in there with it running, I'd use the torpedo when I'm at work then fire up the wood stove when I got home. |
