As with all racial labels it's unhelpful to some extent. In CA Asian usually means north/east Asian, but in Britain Asian means Pakistani, etc.

That usage has started to seep into the States' terminology, so it's really hard to know.

Demographically, for California the best guess is north/east Asian e.g. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc.

There might be actually less than 2 million people in the whole world.
