many greats listed on this thread.. but the person I find most interesting these days is Nina Hagen.

I first heard her in about 1979 and hated her and passed immediately onward.. she was the queen of punk then.

I learned she was trained as operatic singer and she can do it although she lacks the control of a professional.

great voice and she can do jazz and blues standards as well.

many of these ladies are great singers but they know their range and it is often narrow eg. registers and even singing styles.

Most shows don't even have theme songs anymore. This is making me depressed. :/

Nina Hagen is amazing, she grew up in East Germany when it was still communist, her step-father was the great Wolf Biermann, he got out, she wanted to get the hell out too, but they wouldn't let her go, so she started kickin' up a storm, told authorities that if they didn't let her go she was gonna raise hell a thousand times harder than her step-father did, and she did, and they let her go, she was stronger and crazier then the East German communist regime :) ... Incredibly difficult person to get along with, her band didn't want to record with her any more, so they recorded her (I think) second album in Germany and she did the vocals in the US. She's still around, as crazy as ever :)

And speaking of crazy:

Dolly Parton kicks her ass.
