Even at the most basic level, not involving the courts, people in their own communities allow those with money and power to get away with more.

Why?

Because they can afford better lawyers.
Because when they sue you, you will have nothing left.
Because if you fight them, you will go broke or to jail in the process.
Because they already own and/or are the political/police/court/community/society influencers.
Because throwing mud at them will damage your own reputation.

I was owned, yes - owned, by a well off woman.

When social services came calling because of significant abuse and neglect, she threatened to sue them and then backed it up with an ivy league university on her side. They backed off.

When the police even stepped near our circle, nothing to do with my abuse, they turned around and backed away. Any time a case touched on our social circle, because it was a higher tier of money, influence, and power, they backed off and quit investigating.
