Obnoxious Soccer Mom Manlet-Shames Umpire; He’s Having None of it... | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 77206374 United States 11/19/2019 03:54 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I never understand the whining at Little league levels. STFU and let the ump do his job. The calls aren't that much better if any of those kids somehow make it to the majors.... Most likely none of them will, hell, lot of them will stop playing sports in middle/high school anyway |

I wouldn’t put up with that crap either from a bunch of obnoxious people. It’s a shame how pathetic this world has become where you yell out obscenities to little league umpires who get paid next to nothing and are trying to help the kids. What kind of example are these scumbags setting for their children? Our society has become a cesspool. God help us. |

We are f***ked Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69377630 I sometimes umpire Little League baseball, and this is not uncommon at all. Every parent of a 7-year-old boy thinks his kid is going to be in the Major Leagues and that a bad call by an umpire when he's 7 is going to make or break his professional career. That said, this guy shouldn't have lost his head and left the field. The parents were right to say he was being unprofessional. Those kids still needed an umpire, and he walked away. There is a way to handle this, though. An umpire on a baseball field is like the captain of a ship. He is well within his job description to have the abusive parents removed from the stands. I've never done it, myself, but I've seen it done on several occasions, and the park will always back up its umpires. Questioning calls is fine (to a point); personal insults are not and can even draw a lifetime ban from a park if they are egregious enough. Once the kids are in the teens this stuff basically never happens. Quality coaches and refs are hard to find. I've even had parents jump the boards to confront me, acting like they're going to throw a punch... LMAO The best part is, we enjoy the opportunity to talk with the kids after the game and explain why their parent(s) are complete fucktards before we let the parents in the dressing room after a game. Afterwards, I remember a couple of us taking that kid and bringing them over to the ice cream truck to get something to tell him, "Dude it's okay" as a couple of us could recognize how embarrassed and awkward he felt because of it. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77017548 You guys tripping on the umpire. Did not see the whole confrontation, only a edited segment. Can we say “fake news” Dam has trump not taught you guys and gals anything. I can tell you exactly how it happened because I've seen these things escalate many times. He probably made what some parent considered a bad call on a pitch. It's very common for people in the stands to think they know balls and strikes better than umpires, as I'm sure everyone has seen watching MLB. Not really a big deal. Umpires mostly laugh it off, and in the Major Leagues, they can't even hear it so they don't have to worry about it. At the lower levels, though, an umpire is separated from the fans by about ten feet and a chain link fence. He can hear everything. When he invetiably ignores it, the parents will often get louder and sometimes, it gets to the umpire and he will respond. When that happens, the personal insults begin and things get out of hand. The way most umpires will handle it is to talk to a coach and try to get him to talk to the offending parents. Usually, that's the end of it, but not every time, and on several occasions, I've seen parents removed from stands. John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. |

I'm telling you how a professional official handles the situation, and I didn't "fall for a butthurt mommy." I would have had her watch the game from the parking lot if I were that umpire. You, and one other poster, seem to think this is just some everyday situation, like he's at the mall and he's being taunted, in which case, I would agree. No good can come of confronting people like that in public where they can gang up on you and will probably call the police if you argue with them. That little fella at the bagel shop comes to mind. On the baseball field, though, the umpire is god. He is the final authority for everyone on his field and observing his field, and doesn't have to put up with nonsense like that. This guy squandered that opportunity by walking away in the one situation in his life where he didn't have to, and he let them win when he had one chance at finally getting one over on people who represent the same people who have probably tormented him his whole life. All he had to do is very calmly tell the coaches that he is not going to tolerate personal abuse on his field, of himself or any players or coaches, and if the offending parents are not removed from the stands immediately, he is calling off the game. John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. |

That's interesting, and a different take than mine, Darkside's, or really any other official with whom I have ever worked. Almost all of them will say it's the parents of the little kids, who have never been in the situation before, who are the worst. Personally, I much prefer umpiring 14-16-year-olds to 5-9-year-olds for that reason, but mostly because it's just better baseball without all the stupid rules to remember that come with coaches pitching. If I had a nickel for every time some coach stepped over the pitching line just to get himself another six inches closer to his player, or some kid tried to stop a play at home by calling timeout from left field, well, I'd probably have a few hundred nickels.
