It can be done if there is a reagent added that prevents water crystallization, anti-freeze if you will. Use some type of perfluorocarbon oil as a blood replacement to keep the tissues oxygenated as well as removing carbon dioxide and cellular waste despite the lower metabolic metabolism.

They cooled the patient down to 50F/10C.

Replaced the blood with oxygenated saline.

The patients brain basically shut down and was able to survive for 2 hours without blood flow on the oxygen in the saline solution.

(The reason they removed the blood was to prevent it from clotting.)

Without a heartbeat , or concerns about blood loss , the surgeons were able to perform a surgery that would normally kill the patient.

They then placed the patient on life support and transfused the blood back in and warmed them back up to body temperature.

The practice of using hypothermia to shut down brain activity for complex surgeries isnt new , the "break through" is using oxygenated saline to replace blood so they could go to a lower temperature, giving the surgeon more time to work.


This is very close to a "suspended animation" but not there yet.

We cant freeze tissue without irreparably damaging it.

BTW, I did a short study on suspended animation for Mars missions when I was an aerospace engineer.

If you can fool the hypothalamus into thinking that the body is overheating, you can get the temp down to 92F or so.

By using drugs such as those used in some surgeries, you can probably get an astronaut to sleep for up to 3 weeks at a time.

The idea is to keep a couple of astronauts awake while the others sleep. Logistics of oxygen, food, water, etc. are greatly reduced. Just the weight of carrying food for a 3 year mission costs billions in launches.

You can keep the hibernating astronauts in the radiation-protected "storm shelter" as well and minimize the risk.

The medical applications are enormous. People waiting for organ transplant can be periodically put into suspended animation while waiting for a match. You could theoretically extend your life to hundreds of years by sleeping most of the time while your 401K grows.

So, wake up, potty break, breakfast, answer email, read news on GLP, exercise, din din, back to hibernation for another 3 weeks.
