Nemrut or Nemrud is a 2,134-metre-high (7,001 ft) mountain in southeastern Turkey, notable for the summit where a number of large statues are erected around what is assumed to be a royal tomb from the 1st century BC. It is one of the highest peaks in the east of the Taurus Mountains.

The mountain lies 40 km (25 mi) north of Kahta, near Adıyaman. In 62 BCE, King Antiochus I Theos of Commagene built on the mountain top a tomb-sanctuary flanked by huge statues 8–9-metre high (26–30 ft) of himself, two lions, two eagles and various Greek, Armenian, and Persian gods, such as Zeus-Aramazd (or Oromasdes, associated with Zoroastrian god Ahura Mazda), Hercules-Vahagn, Tyche-Bakht, and Apollo-Mihr-Mithras. These statues were once seated, with names of each god inscribed on them. The heads of the statues at some stage have been removed from their bodies, and they are now scattered throughout the site.

The western terrace contains a large slab with a lion, showing an arrangement of stars and the planets Jupiter, Mercury and Mars. The composition was taken to be a chart of the sky on 7 July 62 BCE.[2] This may be an indication of when construction began on this monument.

The statues, all of them "beheaded", have not been restored to their original condition.

Two big doves live in the left-hand tree, Two smaller doves in the right-hand tree. One of the big doves constantly flies over and wing-whacks and bullies the little doves driving them off their eggs and out of their nest. it’s a birdie war zone.

After one prolong attack, bully dove retired to a branch on the other side of the tree trunk from the little doves and their nest. A couple minutes later a dozen sparrows come chattering into the little doves’ tree. They sit in a half circle above the big bully dove. Shortly after that, A female grackle flies over and lands on a branch in front of Ms. Bully. Two other female grackles fly in. They’re all talking grackle talk. The sparrows have settled in and are quiet.

The first crackle jumps to Ms. Bully’s branch, sits down right next to her, looks at her and just rags on her, Talking, talking, and talking. This goes on for at least two minutes.

A starling flies in and, like the sparrows, just watches. Ms. Little Dove is sitting on her eggs in her nest, her mate sitting on another branch near her. Ms. bully lowers her head, Growls and starts waving her tail up and down, letting everyone know they’re getting on her nerves and she doesn’t like it not one bit.

Grandma Graco continues talking, though, and all the auntie grackles chime in every once in a while. They make their point. Ms. Bully takes off. The grackle leave. The sparrows leave. The starling leaves. The little doves settle back in.
