Quoting: Luisport SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES... The main adjustment to the forecast was to the hazard grids for the Flash Flood Watch and Winter Storm Warning to better reflect areas impacted as snow levels lower. For mountains below 5500 feet, the initial threat will be mainly heavy rainfall and the potential for flash flooding with the initial heavy snow threat at elevations mostly above 5500 feet. As snow levels lower, the threat at mountain elevations will gradually transition from heavy rainfall to heavy snowfall. The decrease in showers may be a little faster for Friday into Friday evening than shown in the currently forecast, but the current forecast remains little changed for now. Another low pressure system for the weekend may remain just far enough off the coast to limited precipitation mainly to Los Angeles County inland. That low pressure system could eventually bring some precipitation to more of far southwestern California early next week. && .HYDROLOGY... Dry weather will continue into this evening. A major winter storm system will bring widespread heavy rainfall and mountain snowfall at times for late tonight through Friday. Mountain areas below 5500 feet will transition from a heavy rainfall with possible flash flooding threat, to a heavy snowfall threat as snow levels lower. The initial cold front is expected move through southwestern California on Wednesday with precipitation rates briefly heavy. A second round of more significant precipitation is expected for late Wednesday night into Thanksgiving Day along with a slight chance of thunderstorms. Showers will continue for Thursday night and gradually decrease in coverage on Friday. Rainfall rates of one- half inch or more per hour are possible in stronger showers and isolated thunderstorms, especially for late Wednesday night through Thanksgiving Day. Rainfall at lower elevations and liquid equivalent at higher elevations through Friday is expected to range from 1 to 1.5 inches near the coast, 1.5 to 2.5 inches in the valleys, and 2.5 to 4 inches in the mounains with locally greater amounts, with one half to one inch in the deserts. Snow levels will lower from around 5500 feet on Wednesday, to 4500 to 5000 feet for Wednesday night into Thanksgiving Day, and 3000 to 3500 feet for Thursday night into Friday. Total snowfall accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are expected between 4000 and 4500 feet, 6 to 18 inches from 4500 to 5500 feet, and from 1 to 3 feet above 5500 feet. Snowfall for lower elevations below 4000 feet of 1 to 3 inches, mostly for late Thursday through Friday. && |

In 1819, 200 years ago, John Farrar, in describing the Great September Gale of 1815, a major hurricane, described the storm as a 'moving vortex' The quote "It appears to have been a moving vortex, and not the rushing forward of the great body of the atmosphere" |

The current system in the plains producing severe wx today will also play a critical role down the line in the form of a 50/50 low. These Lows are trapped underneath a -NAO block to the north and that general position would force the storm track SE underneath the block. Where and how strong this 50/50 low is will determine the eventual storm track of the current bomb cyclone off the Oregon coast into New England. |

I’ve no doubt those strong gusts are going to knock down a lot of power poles (and obviously trees). Some prolonged power outages could be coming… That means water lift stations and drainage/sewage pumps… |
