Responding to concerns on social media just after the loud bang at 4:20am, Metropolitan police urged calm.

"The loud bang heard throughout north London and surrounding areas was the result of a sonic boom from RAF planes," it said. "There is no cause for concern."

But with the loud bang heard from South London to Cambridge - not everybody was convinced.

"The sound was heard throughout London and Hertfordshire," said one critic on Twitter. "Doubt a fighter jet could’ve caused that."

That's exactly what would happen though. A sonic boom isn't just in one place, if a fighter jet is travelling over the speed of sound.

Definitely something out of the ordinary going on over the skies of the UK over the last few nights. I and my father in law, on separate occasions, have seen slow moving crafts that have been travelling in weird routes before disappearing.

Could these jets have been chasing after a UFO?

in the central highlands where they fly low on practice runs , you hear the booms and they are loud but they don't shake buildings

and I've seen them fly low 200 m away (in a building ) and nothing shook

I live 3 miles from RAF coningsby and can confirm 2 jets scrambled (They take off will full afterburners) last night.
But the sounds you hear on that tweet are NOT sonic booms caused by jets!

I have heard over a hundred sonic booms living here and always there is the sound of afterburners prior to and after the boom. Afterburners are loud enough too be heard 10's of miles always and has that deep rumbling that shakes your house! The jet has too reach 768mph to create a sonic boom and that takes full afterburners too reach.

It's more likely something was shot down!?
