Many despise the Catholic Church because it is solely responsible for preserving Christianity--no RCC, no Christianity--it would have been wiped out centuries ago.
I may not believe in all RCC dogma, but it was the unbreakable wall that held back the hordes of Asia and Africa. Of course, that was in the day that it actually had Christians for Popes--not so in the present.

One might argue that Gnostic Christianity would've been thriving if Catholics hadn't eradicated them from the face of the Earth with only the most vile violence and 'un-Christlike' behavior ever exhibited in human history.
