Using your internal compass to discern what is for you and what is not is what is helpful in my experience.
For instance, Carl Jung is a genius. Not looking into his lifetime of work because it wasn't your own is egotistic.
Find the balance between.
Following anything blindly is never good.
There is a way to see if other people are working on things in alignment with positive growth for humanity.
There are also those who would choose profit over benevolence.
