They really like to make people believe the stock market is a representation of the economy... and, like you suggest, an overwhelming majority of the DJIA value is Apple, MS, Google, and Amazon. You take out like the top 25-50 stocks and everything else is like a penny stock.

Without the two conglomerates, there would be other companies to fill the void, to meet consumer demands.

The investment would likely still be there, but spread across many other investment opportunities.
