But Hitler wasn't fighting communism... at least for the first 2 years of WWII. Before Germany invaded Poland they had a treaty with the communist Soviet Union. Before Germany fought communists they first invaded Czechoslovakia, Austria, Poland, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands and France NONE of which were communist. The war had been going on for 2 years and Germany had invaded most of western Europe before Germany was fighting communists.

Pretty simple.... they didn't. None of the 2 million civilians murdered by Einsatzgruppen kill squads across Eastern Europe were tattooed. None of the more than 2 million from the Polish Ghettos who were liquidated in Operation Reinhard were tattooed.

Nazi Germany captured and used 15 to 20 million people for slave labor in their labor camps. It was these slaves that were tattooed. The camps were brutal, packed with people and full of disease.

Even at Auschwitz there was a sorting process and those to be immediately exterminated (typically anyone over 50, children and anyone in poor heath) were quickly killed while those to be used at slave labor were tattooed and sent to a slave labor camp.

One of the reasons the Nazis lost is because they did a lot of wasteful and stupid things. As the Red Army approached Warsaw after annihilating Army Group Center the Polish citizens rose up against their Nazi occupiers. After defeating the poorly armed citizens in the Warsaw Uprising Adolf Hitler ordered that Warsaw be destroyed. So late in 1944 as the war neared its end Germany used huge resources in explosives, manpower and fuel to destroy the city. They definitely could have been used in the war but Hitler ordered Warsaw destroyed so hospitals, churches, schools, historic builds and everything else was destroyed. 90% of the buildings in the city were destroyed. At the end of WWII the most destroyed city in the world was not Berlin, Tokyo, Hiroshima or Nagasaki.... it was Warsaw Poland.

So remember, we are talking about things done out of hate and without thought... and such decisions were not always logical.
