Fun fact: Most of the bear that show up in crazy places like this are the younger bear that are pushed out by their mother. Most refuse to leave and go out on their own until the mom forces them to. They need to find a new territory to live in and sometimes they end up in the wrong place. Poor bear must be scared to death. |

Mom kicked him (or her) out and it needs to discover a territory that isn't already occupied. This is the most dangerous time of a black bear's life as an older boar will kill and eat a displaced youngster. Scared to death is exactly the correct depiction. |

When the US was first settled there were many stories of black bear attacks, and sometimes the bear won. It was a shoot on sight policy for about a full century. Finally the only survivors were the shy and retiring types who ran away upon sight or scent of a man. It is my belief that the black bear of today is more cowardly than you would have encountered two hundred years ago. |
