The problem with the cable plan is the infrastructure it takes to make a cable network. If there are two competing networks, they can expect half the customers in a given area with the same infrastructure.

That's why you rarely see two providers in the same service area. I just costs too much to install new hubs, fiber, wiring, data centers, etc. for an expected half the revenue at best.

The competition is going to come by way of the wireless cellular carriers when they get the bandwidth & speed up to par with fiber. Now, you have to deal with satellite and the (un)reliability of that and your cell connection.

Electricity is a public utility, but we still get price gouged for it.

In order to make this work? The State and Counties would have to buy back the right of way, Purchase existing equipment and take over maintenance.

Years ago, the government doled out billions of tax payers dollars to these giants to build the infrastructure in order to get us into the modern era.

Even the backbones were government funded.

What do they do?
They failed in many areas as promised and the money went into the pockets of upper management and wall street.

We see this over and over and over again where they take the money to enrich themselves rather than using it for the public as was intended.
