It was a Chinese sky lantern, It was one of the newer ones that have some type firework powder in the fuel. When it burns down to some of the powder it ignites and falls down.
I have personally used them and they look just like the video

Jeff actually has a valid point. I've tooled around with sky lanterns a few times, I've seen "little flares" come off of them occasionally when hot paraffin ignites as it drips off the main fuel source. Sky lanterns are cool but can be a tremendous fire risk.
